| The tertiary education system in China has grown exponentially in the last ten years. The educational facilities in all universities kept expanding through three different ways, rebuilding old campuses, constructing new campuses, and developing the university cities. It is quite common now that a campus planning competition is held before a new campus is going to be build, by which a lot of good projects stand out. However, some problems come out at the same time. Based on the analysis of several projects, this article tries to summarize the primary characters of contemporary campus planning in China and to find some solution to the present problems.The article consists of three sections:Section one: this part focuses on the primary characters of college and university. It begins with illuminating the origin and the general idea of university, and tries to analyze the important relationship between the special quality in campus and the concept of university education. It also covers the most important points of the entire article, which explain the concept of campus planning and the effective way of organizing campus spaces.Section two: this part firstly looks back through the history of university development, and then compares universities in China with those in other countries. Based on these analyses, it tries to illustrate the significance of university development both in quantity and quality. At last, it introduces three main methods of campus planning and construction.Section three: In this part, the article primarily analyzes the problems in current campus planning in China, including campus dimensions, campus scale, site choosing, culture context and space organizing. Then it introduces some tendencies of recent campus planning, such as ecotypic university, intelligent university, Cyber-university and so on.
