Liupanshan Mountains are located in the south of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region of China, are headstreams of several rivers on the loess plateau that is shorts of water, and are also the typical areas on the important function in the balance of ecosystem and water resources on the loess plateau. Based on the situation of water conservation forest on Liupanshan Mountains and problems in silviculture, management and evaluation of water conservation forest at home and abroad, the succession rules are discussed, the selection criterion of tree species, comprehensive evaluation index system and selection methods are studied, and the afforestation experiment effects with Close to Nature Forestry way and the improvement experiment effects on pure stand of Larix principi-rupprechii and brushwood also are analyzed. In the end, the estimation and evaluation in water conservation benefit and the economic valuation on ecosystem service of water conservation forest on Liupanshan Mountains are done. The results not only can be used directly in afforestation and management of water conservation forest, but also can provide methods and basis on scientific evaluation of water conservation forest effect. Its main research results are:On the succession rules The main climax coenotype on Liupanshan Mountains is cold-temperate coniferous forest; The meadow of Saussurea iodostgia, forest of Betula utilis, forest of Pinus armandii, forest of Queicus liaotungensis are relative stable communities; Almost current communities are belonged to transition type of succession stage, they need to be protected or improved in the future. On tree species selection The scientific selection criterion of tree species, selection process and method are put forward; The index system of comprehensive evaluation and selection techniques that consist of 30 factors are advanced. It is the great leap from description to quantify. On afforestation techniques with Close to Nature Forestry way The experiments on Liupanshan Mountains indicate that afforestation with Close to Nature Forestry way can formed deciduous broad-leaved and coniferous mixed forest, and the average stand tree height can reach more than 122cm after 6-7 years.
