| Gastric cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm of digestive system. In our country about 160 thousand people die of gastric cancer each year, leading other malignant neoplasm. Surgical treatment is the most effective method of treating the disease, but the improvement in surgery alone cannot ensure hign survial rate in patients with gastric cancer. There are quite a lot people who died of tumor metastasis at local or abdomina cavity and to distant viscera, therefore, emphasizing the importance of surgery with chemotherapy and other comprehensive methods for gastric cancer has acquired the reconciliation. With the improvement of biotechnology, many auxiliary chemical treatment schemes have been developed aimed to ensure a successful resection, to decrease the relapse rate and to prevent the tumor from metastasis. However, with the tumor's invasive characters, the 5-year survival rate for patients suffered from advanced gastric cancer is still low (about 10%). So, to find an effective and efficient chemical drug used as auxiliary treatment for gastric cancer is necessary.The accuracy and reliability in treatment, along with low toxicity are requested for a qualified chemical drug.5-FU, a traditional chemical drug, was discovered at 1950's, since then Mitomycin (MMC),> Dixorubicin (ADM), Epirubicin, Cisplatin (CDDP),> armustine (BCNU). Etc, have been adopted into the> clinical practice one by one. Recently, some> derivatives of 5-FU, such as FUDR, Nimustine (ACNU), Etoposide (VP-16), and Leucovorin (CF) have been found. This kind of drug shows good quality in>their clinical use according to some reports. But some side-effect, such as bonemarrow suppresion and GI reaction, are inevitable and formidable, besides, the drug resistance also exists.Gastric cancer in traditional Chinese medicine is> categorized as "stomach ache" , "vomiting", "feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen", The basic pathogenesis of gastric cancer includes the stagnation of the stomach-qi, blood stasis, retention of phlegm and fluid and the deficiency of the vital-qi. The weakness of "spleen -stomach" and "qi-blood" is the internal basic cause of the occurrence of the disease while the invasion of pathogenic factors is the external one. The deficiency of "ben" and the excess of "biao" lead to a basic treatment principle: the combination of strengthening the body resistance with eliminating pathogenic factors. Invigorating qi or enriching blood, neutralizing yin and yang, regulating the function of spleen -stomach, combined with promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, tendering and eliminating the hard nodosity are the preferred methods for the treatment of gastric cancer.Many data suggest that the initiation of tumor has relevance to the abnormal ability in necrosis, as well as in disorder of cell proliferation. In case of malignantation mechanism of tumor, somatic cell mutation theory, multiple steps theory and the activation of oncogene theory have proved that the initiation and development of cancer is a complex process involving many factors. Modem medical research indicates that the initiation and development of gastric cancer is related closely to the dysfunction in apoptosis. Apoptosis, also named programmed cell death, is different fro cell necrosis with distinctive morphological and biochemical characters. The formation of tumor micro vascular, the misbalance of oncogene and anti-oncogene regulation is related to the invasion and metastasis in gastric cancer. Presently, the research for treatment of gastric cancer is focused on the induction and regulation of tumor cell apoptosis. Further study and comprehensive understand for the apoptosis inducing mechanism of anti-cancer drugs may create more treatment scheme.Traditional Chinese medicine used as an auxiliary drug attracts people's interest for its effectiveness, lower toxicity and cheapness.
