The Sonchus genus is genera of family Compositae tribe Lactuceae subtribe Lactucinae and perennial herbs. More than 50 species were found widely in Europe, Africa and Asia. There are 8 species distributed in China, mainly the Xinjiang province and southwestern mountainous region of China. Among them, 5 Sonchus species have long been used as folk medicine in China for the treatment of fever, stasis and inflammation, as well as for detoxication and invigorating of blood circulation. The Ligularia genus is genera of family Compositae tribe Senecioneae subtribe Senecioninae and perennial herbs. More than 100 species grow in northwestern, southwestern and northeastern areas of China. Among them, more than 20 Ligularia species have long been used as folk medicine in China. Their roots, stems, leaves and flowers possess efficacies of antipyretic, relieving phlegm and relieving cough, invigorating the circulation of blood and soothing pain. The Ixeris genus is genera of family Compositae tribe Lactuceae subtribe Lactucinae and perennial herbs. More than 50 species were found widely in the world. About 20 species are distributed in China, of which about 10 species have long been used as traditional Chinese medicinal herbs for the treatment of fever and inflammation along with detoxication, invigorating circulation of blood and soothing pain.We studied the chemical constituents of three Comositae species. The chemical constituents were isolated by means of silica gel column chromatography (CC), preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and recrystallization etc. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods: UV, IR,EI-MS, FAB-MS, HR-MS, ^NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT, ^H COSY, HMQC, HMBC and XH- H NOESY. From Sonchus transcapicus Nevski., thirty-three compounds were isolated, five of them are new. From Ligularia tongolensis (Franch.) Hand-Mazz., eighteen Compounds were isolated, four of which are new. From Ixeris polycephala Cass., thirty-eight compounds were isolated and two compounds are new. However, up to now, chemical studies of these plants have not been reported.Furthermore the bioactivities of some compounds were studied, using cup-plate technique to test their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Eshericia coli, and using MTT and SRB methods to evaluate their cytotoxic activity against cultured human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells, human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells, murine melanoma B-16 cells, human embryo liver L-02 cells and human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. Compound SI, S2 and S3 exhibited moderate antibacterial activity, while compound S3 showed appreciable cytotoxic activity against cultured human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells. The results would be a supplement for the research on bioactivity of chemical constituents in traditional Chinese medicine, helpful reference for pharmacology, chemotaxonomy and screening new medicines, and may benefit utilizing and developing the natural resources of our country.
