The Vicia sativa linn, a perennial herb, is genus of family Papilionaceae. There are about 200 species all over the world which are widely distributed in Northern Hemisphere temperate regions and South America. In China, there are 43 species and 5 mutations which are widely spreaded all across the country, espacially in Northwest, North and Southeast. They have long been used as green manure, also are fine pastures. Previous studies on Vicia sativa linn indicated that it contained flavonol, flavonol glycoside, steroid and terpenes. It is also reported that its extract was ever used to treat tumor. The Euphorbia pekinensis Rupr is a genus of family Euphorbiaceae tribe Euphorbia and a perennial herb. There are about 8000 species all over the world which are widely distributed in tropic or subtropic zone. The genus Euphorbia is composed of more than 360 species in China which are widely spreaded in provinces south of Yangzi River. The major actively functional constituents include alkaloid, diterpenoids and triterpenoids. Research shows diterpenoids have anti-tumor, antibiosis, antiviral activies. In order to explore more medical potential plants of Vicia species and Euphorbia species, and to exploit new resources of Chinese traditional medicine, the chemical constituents of these two plants have been studied. The compounds were isolated by means of silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 gel columm chromatography, preparative thin layer chromatography and recrystallization etc. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (IR, EI-MS, HR-ESI-MS, 1H NMR,13C NMR, DEPT,'H-'H COSY, HMBC, HSQC etc.). From Vicia sativa linn, ten compounds were isolated and elucidated, one of them is new compound, and twenty compounds were isolated and elucidated from Euphorbia pekinensis Rupr and three of them were new compounds, one triterpene was isolated from nature for the first time. Meanwhile, some compounds were tested for cytotoxic activity the result indicated that one of them exihibited high cytotoxic activity. Finally, studis on chemical constituents of Euphorbiaceae were reviewed in this thesis.
