This doctoral dissertation deals with the chemical investigation of Chinese medicinal plants, viz. Schisandra propinqua (Wall.) Baill., S. sphenanthera Rehd. et Wils. and S. henryi Clarke, and the occurrence of eight pharmacologically active lignans in fifteen Schisandra and Kadsura species (41 samples) by high performance liquid chromatograph. The results along with morphological, geographical and phytochemistry data, a chemotoxonomic and phylogenetic study on Schisandraceae was carried out. Intensively, a comparison between Fructus Schisandra chinensis and Fructus Schisandra sphenanthera, both recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2000 ed) was thoroughly studied. In addition, the ethnopharmacologic information, chemical constituents as well as biological activities on schisandraceous medicinal plants were also reviewed in this paper. From the ethanol extract of Schisandra propinqua stem fifteen compounds were isolated by various column chromatographs, from which twelve were determined by spectroscopic analysis (IR, UV, MS, 'H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, HMQC, 1H-1HCOSY and HMBC). One of them was a new triterpene with specific skeleton and named schisanterpene A(sps-04), which has already been got Chinese Patent(No. 01120494.S), and its pharmacological tests is still going on, the remainer 11 compounds (including 3 lignans) were all isolated from S. propinqua for the first time.
