[Objective] α smooth muscle actin is a marker of myofibroblast. As we know, myofibroblasts play an important role in fibrosis disease, but no report has been found about the relationship between myofibroblasts and oral submucous fibrosis. In order to discuss the effects of myofibroblast in the pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis, We have detected the expression of a-SMA in oral submucous fibrosis tissues, normal controls tissues and fibroblasts from OSF patients and healthy controls in this article.[Methods] The expressions of a-SMA in oral submucous fibrosis tissues and normal controls tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. Fibroblasts from oral mucous of OSF patients and healthy controls were isolated and cultured, and were stimulated by arecoline, The expressions of a-SMA in OSF fibroblasts and normal fibroblasts were detected by immunocellchemistry and RT-PCR.[Results] (1)No positive expression was found in normal tissues except in the blood vessel,But in OSF tissue, a-SMA positive expression was found in many spindle cells in the oral submucousal layer. (2) Few fibroblasts in vitro from normal controls were a-SMA positive. (3) Most...
