Platycodi Radix, the root of Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC (Campanulaceae), has been used in traditional Oriental medicine as an expectorant and antitussive used to treat coughs, colds, upper respiratory infections, sore throats, tonsillitis, and chest congestion. In northern China and Korea, Platycodi Radix is also used as a food. Chemical investigation on P. radix revealed that triterpenoid saponins were the main chemical components. The investigation on the saponin composition from roots of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A.DC. has resulted in the isolation and structure elucidation of ten new triterpenoid saponins named as prosapogenin G1 (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-2β, 3β, 16α, 23, 24-penta-hydroxyolean-12-ene-28-oic acid)(1), Jiegengnoside I (3-O-β-Z)-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-polygalacic acid 28-O-β-D-xylpyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl ester)(2), Jiegengnoside II (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl- (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-polygalacic acid 28-O-β-D-xylpyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabino-pyranosyl ester)(3), Jiegengnoside III (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl polygalacic acid 28-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl ester)(4), Jiegengnoside IV (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→3)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-2β, 3β, 16a, 23, 24- pentahydroxyolean-12-ene-28-oic acid)(5), Jiegengnoside V (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-2β, 3β, 16α, 23, 24-pentahydroxy-olean-12-ene-28-oic acid)(6).
