Modernization and nationalization are modern China’s intertwining double desires, modern national imagination, and the core theme of Chinese modern literature. There is an intricate relationship between the pursuit of modernization and the expression of nationalization in the development of Chinese modern literature. As the most important new literature genre, fiction’s change in content and form is the symbol of the complex relationship between nationalization and modernization. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the national form, nationalization, Chinese style and so on became the literary topics. Literary creation obviously showed a return to tradition. The ethical orientation was not entirely the utilitarian response to era requirement under the background of national war, but a passive pause of the new literary creation practice, but also the adjustment deepening of literary modernist pursuit under local position. In the war the special background, geographical environment provided unusual literary space for the development of fiction. Examining fiction’s nationalization pursuit background process, morphological characteristics, taste selection can further investigate the national construction of literature in national crisis, in order to gain a new understanding of the complex relationship between nationalization and modernization. This paper chooses two areas to reveal the nationalization pursuit in different degrees:one area is the Shanghai Occupied Area during the period of Japanese regime from1941to1945, with the purpose of examining the status of novels in this area from the outbreak of the Pacific War to the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. The other area is the Yanan Liberated Area after Yanan Art Forum held in1942. The novel creation on modern national imagination in this area under the control of new literature and art policy is mainly examined. The difference in literary style in two areas must be great because of their different political nature and discourse space. However, novels in the both areas, during roughly the same time period, in different space environment present the mutual orientation of nationalization pursuit; their either explicit or implicit show of national survival, their different borrowing of national literature tradition, their dependence upon the angles of folk culture, also reflect multiple expressions of nationalization in different space. This paper first examines the effect of nationalist consciousness on the birth of Chinese novels modern transformation, then points out there was a paradox of nationalization pursuit hidden between the western pursuit in May4th movement novels and the expectations for popular acceptance. Due to the lack of native cultural position, several popular literary discussions and different experiments on language forms had failed to create a new situation of national creation in1930s. The bloody national war intensified the social problems in transitional era, and promoted universal thinking about the national wayout, changed writers’living condition and their literary concept. The reset of literary activity space contributed to the historical encounter of May4th discourse and the fate of the nation, daily life and regional culture. The paper then points out that opening the folk living space, entering underlying cultural ecology promoted deep excavation of nationalist debates and creation. The novels in both areas established respectively citizens’and farmers’ dominant position in Chinese literature, and each under the commercial and political power was pushed into public life, folk culture, national tradition, making thoughts on nation, exploration of modernization bear national character with Chinese characteristics. This paper then selects several aspects to analyze the specific presentation of nationalization exploration in novels in content and form. In terms of content the different effects of the nationalization trend on family writing and daily life writing are analyzed; in terms of form this paper analyzes the fact that novels inherited and innovated serial type and legendary form. This paper finally points out the important role of the egoistic position of national culture in the development and variation of modern Chinese fiction. Short but brilliant history of novels in two areas in national crisis reminds us to review the non-opposite and dialectical relationship between modernization and nationalization, to rethink their evolution from the May4th Movement to enlightenment and salvation, and to evaluate the successive relationship between nationalization process and tradition of the May4th Movement.Modern China has been in a double crisis of modernization lag and nationality loss. Novels in the two areas in this national disaster happened to combine tradition with modernism, fuse Chinese and world culture resources, which turned out to be a modern exploration of localization with an obvious tendency of nationalization. This rare literary experience inspired us settled in Globalization:we should adhere to the root of national culture, blend into the folk, communicate with the world, and therefore enrich cultural diversity of the world with the unique expression of national spirit.
