This Dissertation studies The Illustrations of Kavyadarsa’s Three Chapter·Intelligent Person’s Necklace Elegant Pearl Rosary (abbreviated hereafter as Pearl Rosary), which is Alasa Lharamba Agvaandandar’s (1759-1840) commentary work on Kavyadarsa by Dandin.Alasa Lharamba Agvaandandar, proficient in Mongolian, Tibetan, Sanskrit and Chinese languages, is a famous Mongolian philosopher, linguist, literary theorist and poet, who made a great contribution to Mongolian culture. Pearl Rosary was composed in 1829 when he was 71 years old, aiming to facilitate youngsters to learn Kavyadarsa. Although scholars conducted a great number of research on Agvaandandar and his works and came out lots of study works primarily focus on his lifetime, deeds and the other works, Pearl Rosary has not been studied well, especially from the aspects of literary theories and philology except for some simple studies on its colophon and parts of example poetries. There is no specialized research work on Pearl Rosary exist up to now. This thesis, based on the literary theories and bibliographic methodology, studies each part of Pearl Rosary in detail, which not only extends the research area of Pearl Rosary and its authors, but also enriches the study on Kavyadarsa. The thesis is consist of Introduction, Four Chapters, Conclusion and Appendix. The Introduction introduces Agvaandandar and his works, the previous studies on Pearl Rosary in summary, and explains the research purpose, significance of the topic and the methodology etc.Chapter One discusses Kavyadarsa and its commentary work Pearl Rosary. As for Kavyadarsa, the versions, spread and contents are introduced briefly; as for Pearl Rosary, the contents and structure are analyzed in detail from the "Discerning style", "The decoration of meaning" and " The decoration of phonetics" three aspect, and the feature of Mongolian translation by A-Erdenibayar and Dongrobjamsu are discussed. We would propose that Pearl Rosary have important status in the Tibetan language works by Mongolian scholars.Chapter Two, including the contents, structure and features of "Discerning style", presents that although there only 39 poems were illustrated, it covers the whole contents of Kavyadarsa; Agvaandandar composed the work in accordance with the theories from Kavyadarsa, but it enriched the contents of original text.Chapter Three makes detailed study on "the ornament of meaning" of Pearl Rosary and investigates on the theoretical view of the Agvaandandar. Through studying "the decoration of direct narrative", The decoration of argumentation", "the romantic decoration", "the decoration of subterfuge", "the decoration of secret praise", "The decoration of double meanings"and"The decoration of mixing"to explore Agvaandandar’s unique view on "The decoration of meaning" and analyze the distinct feature of "The decoration of metaphor" and " The decoration of image" which are more similar to "The decoration of meaning". Through comparing Agvaandandar’s example poems with the corresponding parts of Kavyadarsa to find out its distinction and creativeness.Chapter Four examines " The decoration of phonetics", "The decoration of argot" and "Poetry disease" of Pearl Rosary. We analyze the structure and features of "Reduplicated decoration", translate "The decoration hard to be reduplicated" into Mongolian and annotate some examples of it, explore it’s pronunciations the aesthetic aspects of contents and forms of this work; we also study the "The decoration of metaphor" and "Poetry disease" to analyze its distinct theoretical view. We point out that Agvaandandar’s "The decoration of phonetics", on the one hand, explained the theories in Kavyadarsa, on the other hand, developed the methods of literary review and explaining with example poems. The Conclusion summarizes the whole contents of the study from four aspects:first, Pearl Rosary was not restricted by the contents and forms of Kavyadarsa but constituted a theoretical system with distinct style and feature; secondly, although the "Discerning style" was composed in according with the theories of Kavyadarsa, it adds more contents and forms; thirdly, Pearl Rosary explains the theories through making example poems, though it inherited from the theories of "the decoration of meaning" of Kavyadarsa; last but not least, the " The decoration of phonetics" of Pearl Rosary shares similarities with the corresponding part of Kavyadarsa, however, it adds new contents such as the distinct example poetries through incorporating organically with Mongolian traditional poems, therefore it also differs from the corresponding works of Tibetan scholars. In the Appendix, the original Tibetan text of "The decoration difficult to do" chapter in The Pearl Rosary, Mongolian translation "The decoration difficult to do" by myself.
