Muyu song is a kind of folk art with Guangdong characteristics. It originated in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, prevailed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, flourished in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and declined in the intermediary period of the Republic of China. Its cultural origin was the "theory of changing literature and customs" of the Tang Dynasty. The Muyu song in Sanjiangzhou of the Pearl River has the characteristics of Buddhism,grass-roots,female music, folklore and enlightenment. At the time of its popularity,Cantonese people almost reached the popularity level of "every family can sing Muyu songs" and "every household has Muyu books".It not only directly derived the Dragon boat,Cantonese Academy and Nanyin folk songs with Cantonese characteristics, but also many songs and singing tunes were directly injected into Cantonese opera, which had a great impact on other Cantonese operas, dramas and folk songs. It can be called "Guangdong Millennium Ancient Rhyme".At present, the overall ecological environment of Muyu song is not optimistic.Except Dongguan attaches great importance to Muyu song, other places are almost in a situation where bosom friends are hard to find and are on the verge of extinction. This paper explores the historical origin, main artistic features and development rules of Muyu song by sorting out the relevant literature and investigating its on-the-spot style. It also makes a deep and positive reflection on its inheritance and future development in order to promote the creative inheritance and innovative development of Muyu song.
