Research on Van Gogh’s Painting activities of early stage is concerned with his painting course before going to France at the beginning of 1886. Van Gogh formally started to practice paintings at the end of 1879, and he passed away in July 1890, so his painting course lasted 10 years or so.However, Van Gogh achieved very remarkable accomplishments. His world-renowned works such as Sunflowers, The Starry Night, The Night Café, Portrait of Pére Tanguy, Portrait of Postman Roulin, Portrait of Dr. Gachet and his own several self-portraits were all painted during over four years when he was in France in the late stage of his life. And his early works, in addition to The Potato Eaters, were hardly known by people. Generally speaking, the great change of Van Gogh’s painting style was caused by the influence of the Impressionist paintings after he went to France,as if the Impressionists had helped and guided Van Gogh to get painting success. However, in fact,Van Gogh was hardly influenced by the Impressionists, and his extraordinary achievements were closely related to his tireless efforts on painting arts during his early life. It had indicated that Van Gogh was sure to become an extraordinary artist and accomplish brilliant achievements when he painted in Holland. The difference from the general beginners was that Van Gogh had a rich accumulation of art and literature knowledge before he formally picked up the brush. The accumulation was mainly from three aspects. First of all, his home circumstance rendered him artistic edification. Secondly, he obtained art knowledge and experience in Goupil & Co. Thirdly,Europe world-known literature works Van Gogh had read offered him nutriment. The literature of Europe critical realism and naturalism in the 19 th century had played a decisive role to cultivate Van Gogh’s ideas of art. When he started to practice painting, he knew well about what he should study, who he should follow, and how he should do step by step. Van Gogh had not approached to the academic paintings since he started to paint. At the beginning, he showed his dislike and rejection to the Academy paintings. Whether in painting technique or painting subject matter, Van Gogh belonged to an anti-academy painter. He did not go to classicism or idealism, on the contrary, his paintings have shown a distinct realistic or naturalistic style and been with a strong emotional vent and had the characteristics of expressionism. Van Gogh’s realistic painting style with expressionist characteristics was a harvest he consciously pursued and it was a self-style that formed on the basis of mixing the techniques of many painting schools and lots of painting masters he admired very much. These painters mainly include the painters of France Barbizon School and English black-and-white artists and the painters of Holland Hague school, along with Rembrant, Frans Hals, Delacroix, Breton, Lhermitte, Courbet, Manet and so on, among which Millet of the Barbizon School had given Van Gogh the greatest influence. Most of the painters who were adored a lot by Van Gogh also deeply influenced the Impressionists. Van Gogh’s painting ideas had tended to be consistent with those of the Impressionists before he was in contact with the Impressionists. The painting style of Van Gogh was hardly changed, and just only reinforced after he got acquainted with the Impressionists. The modern factors of Van Gogh’s paintings and his Avant-garde art ideas were all closely related with his early study and accumulation. The growth process, artistic exploration and painting achievement in the early stage of Van Gogh’s life had sent a clear signal that Van Gogh would be an extraordinary artist. Even if Van Gogh had not gone to France, he would never be unknown to the public, and his reputation would still rise sharply. It was the times that had called Van Gogh to France and France only offered him a lager space on which he was able to show his talents. But Van Gogh’s extraordinary talents were mainly trained in Holland. Van Gogh had been like a machine when he was in Francethat produced and made paintings, and he invented and designed them while he was in Holland. In fact, his painting works of the Holland period have higher value and more charming taste.
