Objective:To excavate successful demonstrations in cultivation of specialized talents with high quality in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, to define the connotation and extension of competency-based talents majoring in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, and to establish and implement cultivation of competent undergraduates in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina.Methods:1. Based on the literature review and comparative study, the articles on talents majoring in acupuncture and moxibustion in TCM colleges since2000were reviewed to analyze the advantages and disadvantages as well as the requirement of educational reform.2."5A" methods of evidence-based were introduced with system review, questionnaire survey and randomized controlled trial.①Ask:Questions about "Competency-based talent cultivation" were raised:What capacities should students majoring in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina possess? What kind of problem exists according to the current talent cultivation mode and how to make it optimized?②Access:First, evidence-based research through literatures was introduced,-where research papers on "Students’Capacity" and "Talent Cultivation Mode" were extracted and data mining was used to summarize18kinds of capabilities students ought to possess in terms of professional skill, thinking ability, qualifications, etc.. Second, evidence-based feedback surveys on effectiveness of teaching were administered to graduates majoring in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina.③Appraisal:One is critical appraisals of educational orientation, which means based on18kinds of capabilities, students should acquire critical-thinking ability, knowledge Learning and acquiring ability, clinical-thinking and manipulative ability, creative ability for scientific research. The other is that the specialists were organized to offer10proposals for establishing education and talent cultivation mode in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina. Analysis of evidence in cultivation links including teaching methods like PBL,CBL and RBL, clinical practice internship and advanced scientific research was made to list in the reform of talent cultivation.④Apply:Expounding and proving the connotation and extension of competency-based talents, defining the standard of core competence and making training objective explicit. On this basis, a new talent cultivation program of specialized graduates in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina will be established.⑤Assess:a randomized controlled trial was employed with both the new and traditional mode to practice teaching, assess ability of critical thinking and3kinds of core competences of students and verify availability and feasibility of the new mode.Results:1.The existing acupuncture and moxibustion professional training on teaching content has been extensively discussed, but the evaluation of the quality of talents was few, the original researchwas rare in RCT research, and systematic review was also a lack.2. Centering on "Ability Cultivation’", the new talent cultivation mode is beneficial to improve students’the spirit for truth, enhance their confidence in critical thinking and stimulate curiosity.3.PBL, CBL and RBL are three kinds of new teaching methods with the same effectiveness in promoting students’ability to acquire knowledge as traditional LBL didactics, but with better effectiveness in promoting abilities of clinical thinking, practices and scientific research innovation.Conclusion:Critical thinking, knowledge learning and acquiring, clinical thinking, manipulative techniques and scientific research innovation are the core competences of students majoring in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, towards which the talent cultivation will be oriented. Evidence-based theory strictly puts the optimized education to practical use and effectively promotes methodology of educational reform, optimize the achievement of talent cultivation, and therefore, the process of talent cultivation of professionals in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina from "opinion-based decision making" to "evidence-based decision making" becomes more achievable.
