The southwest border area of China, bordering on Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, is not only connects southeast Asia, but also the southwest passage of China to the Indian Ocean, the location advantage is very outstanding. In recent years, CAFTA has been built, GMS has been deepened, and " Belt and Road" strategy has been put forward, will bring unprecedented development opportunities to the southwest border area, and make it become the forefront opening area of southwest of China. For a long time, the population problem of southwest border area has always been the focus of academic circles, such as cross-border ethnic problems, cross-border marriage problems, the relationship between population and economic development, and so on. However, there are few research results from the perspective of geography. With the improvement of open degree, the shielding effect of the regional weakened gradually, the population phenomenon of southwest border area becomes more complex, changing the population spatial pattern.Paper makes the southwest border area as the research scope, and chooses the data of population census of 1990, 2000, 2000 three times as the based data, respectively selects Tengchong county, Zhenkang, Gengma county, Cangyuan county of the Sino-Burmese border, as well as Malipo, Maguan county of the ChinaVietnam border as the interview and questionnaire survey. And from the perspective of geography, by means of theories of demography, sociology, international relations, ethnology, to discuss the cross-border ethnic population, population spatial pattern evolution mechanism, and the influence of the floating population of southwest border areas under the precondition of consulting a large number of literature and historical materials, using the GIS spatial information technology, by adopting the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Conclusions of the paper are better for construction of southwest border economic, and to provide the reference basis for harmonious development of population, economy, society, and natural environment.According to the research, the content of the thesis is divided into four main parts. The first part, to summarize the research at home and abroad, and discriminated key concepts. The second part, due to the particularity of the border region, the paper analyzes the changes, features and trends of the geographical environment. The third part, To do the static description and dynamic analysis of the evolution characteristics of population, ethnic population, population floating population of southwest border areas at 1990, 2000, 2010. The fourth part, analyzed the affecting factors and influences on the changes of population spatial patterns, and summarized the law and characteristics of the evolution of the spatial pattern of population in the southwest border area. The paper mainly has 3 characteristics. First, the research content is very novel. From the domestic and foreign research situation, from geography angle of population in the border areas of research results rarely, on the border region of the spatial pattern of population evolution of the study will make up for defects of population in the border areas of research contents, further enrich the population science theory system. Second, combined with the particularity of border areas, for the first time the factors of geographical environment as the spatial pattern of population evolution analysis, break through the traditional pattern of the study on the influencing factors of the spatial pattern of population. The third, in population redistribution index based on present the evolution of the spatial pattern of population natural change caused by index and mechanical changes cause index, a new research method for the evolution of the spatial pattern of population.Through the study of China southwest border area population spatial pattern, the following conclusions:(1)The natural environment determines the evolution of the spatial pattern of population basic pattern.(2) Economic development is fundamental driving force for the evolution of the spatial pattern of population.(3) The southwest border areas of population spatial pattern evolution and geographical, political and economic environment relationship closely. Due to the special geographical location of the southwest border area, geo political and economic environment in the evolution of the spatial pattern of population plays a very important role, the spatial pattern of population will change with the change of the geo environment.(4) Ethnic groups ofcross border in the spatial pattern of population will exist for a long time, the trend of national integration unstoppable.(5)The southwest border areas the spatial pattern of population evolution is more active, but to attract committed to equilibrium, causing changes in the spatial pattern of the population of insufficient force.(6) The evolution and the impact of the spatial pattern of the population in the southwest border area has the following main features:first, the population growth is slow, and the gathering phenomenon of population is emerging; second, the cross-border ethnic population spatial pattern is stable, and the population sex ratio is low;third, the floating population growth is rapid, and the spatial pattern change is fast;fourth, the population growth of regional economic development played a obvious role in promoting; fifth, population growth and not bring pressure on the natural environment, but to stimulate the natural environment bearing capacity increase; the sixth. Population is mainly concentrated in the primary industry, labor surplus lead out of the rapid increase of the population; the seventh, go out and accounts to be determined population continued to increase to pose a threat to the border security.
