China is a big agricultural country in tradition. Agricultural trade plays an important role in the development of country economy. The Eleventh Five-year Development Plan of Agricultural Export focuses on solving a series of major policy issues that impact agricultural production and trade, and lay foundation for further agricultural export. The eleventh five-year plan strategy points out that we should adhere to the path of agricultural modernization with Chinese characteristics, to ensure food security for the nation as a premier goal, to accelerate the agriculture transformation, to improve the ability of production, resisting risks and market competitiveness. In recent years, central government implemented many preferential policies to support the agricultural production and promote rural economic development, so the level of agricultural production, modernization and industrialization has been raised, and also, it helped to create a better policy environment and trade environment for the export of agricultural products. However, the competition in international market of agricultural product is becoming more and more intense and the export of Chinese agricultural products is facing severe challenges with the internationalization of agriculture and trade liberalization. The United States is really a big country of agricultural production and trade in the world. It has been the fourth largest agricultural export market and the largest agricultural import market to China. It is also an important agricultural trade partner to China. In both China and U.S, the scale of agricultural trade has been developing rapidly, but the proportion of agricultural trade is less than the industrial manufactures in goods trade, and there is a fact that China is standing position of adverse balance for agricultural trade between China and U.S. Therefore, from a long-term point of view, the United States is one of the most potential export markets of agricultural products for China. We cannot ignore the impact of U.S. market when talking about the development of Chinese agricultural trade. In addition, research on the development of U.S export market gives us lots of beneficial insight into the further favorable development of the agricultural export trade.Based on some theories and some existing results, combined with the practice, this paper analyzes the present situation of agricultural trade both in China and U.S firstly. Secondly, and it analyzes the issue that whether the agricultural products demand structure of China matches the agricultural products demand structure of US or not, based on Spearman rank correlation coefficient, beneficial index, and Laurence index. Thirdly, we explore the situation of china’s agricultural products exported to the U.S. based on export similarity index and shift share method. Fourthly, the article measures the cost of Chinese export trade to U.S based on a unilateral, cost model of export trade which was built by author. In addition, it analyzes the factors which may influence the growth of Chinese agricultural export trade based on CMS model. From the results we can see:China’s agricultural exports to U.S is not strongly match the United States’imports demand structure, but the change tendency is similar and change with slightly varies, strong stability. China doesn’t occupy a large place in U.S market because of the fierce competition among developing countries, especially the strong competitiveness from Thailand. However, China still keeps strong competitiveness, ranking second only to India. Since China has been been join the WTO, the export costs of agricultural products to shows a treed of dropping at finny and rising later, the overall changed slowly, but a large decrease can be seen which ranking second to India, when compare with other exporters. Those decrease made a great contribution to the increase amount of Chinese agricultural export to U.S. The main factors that influence the Chinese agricultural trade which export to U.S are the demand of U.S agricultural products and the competitive power of Chinese agricultural products. Finally, the paper gives some suggestions to promote the development of Chinese agricultural trade to in several aspects such as improving the ability of structure adjusting, improving the competitiveness of Chinese exports to U.S., and reducing the cost of exports.
