Research On External Information Support System For Online Group Idea Generation

In the creative problem-solving process, the quality of ideas generated constitutes an upperlimit on the quality of the whole process. However, during the process of idea generating, due tothe limits of working memory, the group discussion of members will follow a certain path whichis called spreading activation. Limited by the individual capability, in this mechanism, when theideas of one thinking path is exhausted, group members cannot switch to another pathindependently, what they can do is switching ideas on current path or path which is activated.Without external information group members can not switch their thinking path to another, thenthe thinking of the group will be limited, which is called “Cognitive Inertia”. We believe thatexternal information support can break the cognitive inertia of group members and cause thedivergent thinking.This paper summarized the theoretic foundation of external information support method andkey factors which could influence it; meanwhile, we developed an external picture supportsystem and proved the feasibility and effectiveness of this system by experiments. This paperfocus on3aspects: the influence of media type and relevance of external information on thegroup idea generation performance; picture support system design and performance of thepicture support system..We first study the influence of media type and relevance of external information on thegroup idea generation performance. We analyzed the cognitive difference of two media-pictureand text. Basing on associative theory of creativity, cognitive network theory and forceassociation method etc., we propose that topic relevance of the external information caninfluence the creativity stimulation. Then,4comparisons are discussed based on the assumption:strong correlation picture and strong correlation text; weak correlation picture and weakcorrelation text; strong correlation picture and weak correlation picture; strong correlation textand weak correlation text. According to the results of experiment, the media type (picture or text)and relevance (strong correlation or weak correlation) is very important to the creativitystimulation. The creativity comes from weak correlation picture is obviously higher than thosefrom strong correlation picture and weak correlation text.Second, we designed the picture support system., established the system structure model ofpicture support system which includes client, server, database and offline updater. Then, wediscussed the issues like client interface, server algorithm, database structure, picture source andoff-line maintenance of picture database etc… and raised solution for a series key problems ofpicture support system, such as picture automatically pushing, picture list independentlypresenting, design of picture database, algorithm for picture database offline updating, picturefilter algorithm of relevant picture maximal differentiation. At last, we described the workingprocess of picture support system.Finally, we studies the group idea generation performance when using three groupdiscussion support system-picture support system, keywords support system and non supportsystem.. The experiment results shows that, the picture support system can positively improvethe atmosphere of idea generation. Meanwhile, the picture support system is obviously betterthan text support system and non-support system on quantity of idea, high quality idea, highcreativity idea, high quality and high creativity idea. According to the subject feedback fromusers, most of the users prefer the picture support system, a part of users prefer key words support system and no user prefers non-support support system. It proves that provide thefunction of dynamic picture support is feasible and effective in a GSS environment.Our contributions are summarized as follows:First, Basing on the SIAM theory, bounded ideation theory, cognitive network theory,bisociation theory and associative theory of creativity, we find a new factor that can influencegroup creativity performance-external information stimulation. Most of current creativitysupport system use existing knowledge or solutions to support group idea generation, whichignored the positive influence of information stimuli to the creativity group. We study the groupidea generation from a new perspective-external information stimuli.Second, we studied the interaction of media type and relevance of external information inthe external information support process. Those two key factors are never studies together before.Through the experiment study, we find that weak correlation picture is much better than othermethods (weak correlation text, strong correlation picture, strong correlation text). Thisconclusion provide theoretical foundation of picture support system.Thirdly, the research of picture support in GSS field is very rare currently. In previousresearch, only some pre-defined pictures are pushing to the discussing group. The method ofpushing pictures according to the real time discussion is never mentioned. We explored a newmethod to stimulate group creativity-external picture support firstly. We developed a picturesupport system which can push picture automatically, suggested a new method that stimulatecreativity using internet pictures, give some solutions for several key problems of picture supportsystem: interface design, picture source, picture filtering algorithm etc. which provided apractical solution to establish picture support system.Finally, we introduced a new dependent variable to the study of group creativity supportsystem-creativity atmosphere. Comparing with creativity result and users’ subjective feeling,previous study didn’t pay much attention to creativity atmosphere. This paper verifies theinfluence to those three dependent variables cause by picture support system, key words supportsystem and non-support system. The result shows picture support system is better than the othertwo on all dependent variables.
