From the Marxism ecological perspective, human and nature are, in certain sense, consistant with each other. The subjectivity and requests of human should be satisfied, and the ecological value of the nature should also be considered. The history of globalization indicates that the impacts of trade on ecological sustainable development should not be underestimated. Meanwhile, ecological sustainable development can affect trade directly. If trade is conducted under the rules of ecological sustainable development, the resources will be more appropriately allocated in a larger scale. The efficient allocation of resources can assure the upgrading of the methods and structure of international trade. Nowadays, the world economic order is under profound adjustment, and China’s foreign trade is facing tighter environmental constrains. It is necessary to further study the relations between trade and ecological sustainable development, considering how to coordinate the two factors in globally recognized ways and in the current international system.Only through appropriate handling of the relationship between the two factors could China avoid incidents such as Material Case and Rare earths Case in WTO dispute settlement, which impacted both ecological sustainable development and trade. Furthermore, from the perspective of advancing the transformation and upgrading of trade, it is necessary to further analyzing the relations of the two factors. Trade is an indispensable part of national economy, especially for China. Trade has played a stupendous role in China’s open-up and reform process. Through a serious of dynamic effects, trade has compensated China’s shortage of capital, technique, experience, labor, etc, accelerating the upgrading of the industry structure and spurring the development of national economy. Moreover, trade has supported China’s role of a responsible power that maintains the development of global economy in a stabilized pace.Nevertheless, China is merely a trading power in terms of scale rather than quality, which is not in accordance with the impacts of trade and China’s status in the world. Therefore, it is urgent for China to further accelerate the reform and to expand the open-up, leaping from a trading power in terms of scale to one in terms of quality. In order to achieve this goal, many scholars have proposed relevant suggestions on conditions of trade, methods of trade, industry structure, technical level, service trade, financial support, global trade network, etc. However, the scholars have not fully considered the relations between trade and ecological sustainable development. Therefore, based on the perspective of ecological sustainable development, integrated the Marxism and Western Economics theories, the article discussed the relationship between foreign trade and ecological resources in an open economy, in the case of China, to examine whether foreign trade will inevitably lead to excessive resource consumptions. We made efforts in two aspects. First, clarify the relationship between foreign trade and the ecological sustainable development in China through history scanning, international comparison and quantitative analysis. Second, conduct an analysis of the relationship by using methods of comprehensive evaluation, international comparison, and empirical test, aimed at exploring the efficient way of balancing China’s foreign trade expansion and ecological sustainable development.Additionally, in order to promote trade, it is of great importance to put forward practical measures and countermeasures based on empirical study. On one hand, it helps to promote the coordinated development of China’s foreign trade, resources and environment, to fuel the trade structure optimization, to increase the proportion of services trade, and to add value to the technical export commodities. On the other hand, it also paves the way for a "comprehensive and systematic ecological civilization system", aimed at pointing out directions for the comprehensive trade reform. The author holds that, as for the relationship between foreign trade and ecological sustainable development, there is a lack of systematic and comprehensive theoretical framework and research contents. The lack of theoretical basis may lead to insufficient conclusions on the current foreign trade and ecological sustainable development research. However, the empirical study on the relationship between trade and ecological sustainable development in China indicates that the significant correlations between the two variables do exist. In addition, China’s foreign trade has negative impacts on ecological environment, therefore causing a rapid inflation of resource consumption and wastewater discharge. However, every coin has two sides. We cannot ignore the positive role of trade, either. The growth of both import and export, especially the import, tends to cut down the industrial solid waste emissions in the long run, thus mitigate the environmental pollution. Therefore, according to the requirement of ecological sustainable development, by lowering the current resource consumption level, increasing the utilization efficiency of resources, and fostering new trade policy can strengthen the competitive advantage of domestic resources utilization. Furthermore, we should deepen resources diplomacy, and strengthen the efficiency of local resources consumption and energy "interconnectivity" to make full use of the global energy resources.
