City groups’ space is the product and symbol of social and economic development. Wuhan metropolitan circle is the typical one that is single-center metropolitan area, and also a region with higher-degree development. Each and every member in Wuhan metropolitan circle, with the central city of Wuhan as their core and support, through mutual combination and interaction development, form a city group with the complementary function, economic interdependence and convergence in social development, which improves the competitive level of Wuhan metropolitan circle. This paper, taking Wuhan metropolitan circle as the research object, did empirical analysis on its formation and development process, analyzed its spatial structure evolution, explored the general rules and inner mechanisms of its development and spatial evolution process and at last, proposed its objectives, principles, pathes and strategies on space integration, which provides the decision-making reference for the integration development in Wuhan metropolitan circle. Thus the theoretical and practical significance goes without saying.There are eight chapters in the paper, according to the need of the paper selected subjects. Chapter 1 is the introduction. The research background, significance, purpose, content, idea, method, general situation on the study area and data source, and data processing and research methods are introduced. Chapter 2 is the relative research progress and theoretical basis at home and abroad. The paper comprehensively reviews the relative studies on cities circle and integrated development at home and abroad, combs the relative studies on urban spatial evolution and its integration development, and combing urban spatial evolution and integration of development and research of relevant theories, and construct basic theories on spatial evolution and integration development of cities circle. Chapter 3 is the general analysis of the spatial evolution in cities circle. Based on the concepts, types, evolution phases of cities circle, by using computer technology, the general process of spatial structure evolution of cities circle is simulated, attempting to establish the general model of cities circle’s spatial structure and its evolution, which build theoretical framework for the study. Chapter 4 is the research on spatial pattern characteristics of cities circle. Based on the analysis of the scope of Wuhan metropolitan circle from the perspective of theory, space elements in Wuhan metropolitan circle are explored, the spatial difference of urban development between members in Wuhan metropolitan circle is evaluated, and then the fractal characteristics of spatial structure of the circle is analyzed. Chapter 5 is the analysis of the evolution of spatial structure of Wuhan metropolitan circle. After the understanding of origin of each city in Wuhan metropolitan circle and the formation of Wuhan metropolitan circle itself, based on the GIS platform, the accessibility level at different times in Wuhan metropolitan circle is calculated and elaborated by using the technology of accessibility, in order to reveal the process and characteristics of evolution in Wuhan metropolitan circle. On that basis, the evolution of the spatial correlation intensity between cities in Wuhan metropolitan circle at different periods is analyzed quantitatively, which further reveals the spatial correlation intensity between cities in Wuhan metropolitan circle and its change process and rules. Chapter 6 is on mechanisms of spatial structure evolution in Wuhan metropolitan circle. The influence factors on urban spatial evolution are firstly elaborated, and then the concept model of spatial evolvement mechanism in Wuhan metropolitan circle is established and explained. Then based on the factor analysis method, the social and economic factors on the mechanism of spatial evolution in the circle are analyzed. Chapter 7 is the research on circle’s spatial integration strategy. The significance and the goal, basis and principle, key points and thinking, and ideas of integration and implementation approaches are elaborated. Chapter 8 is conclusion and outlook. The main conclusions of research are summed up, and the possible innovation points, the deficiencies and prospects of further research are mentioned.The main conclusions in the paper can be generally summed up as:(1) what is the concept of cities circle, types and what are the functions of cities circle? Cities circle is a regional spatial organization in certain spatial scope with one or more megacity or large city as its core, and middle-sized and small cities with different identities, scales and ranks as its members. It is also a regional spatial organization representing economic integration development and ring-layer territorial structure with close spatial location, functional correlation and interdependence between cities. Cities circle generally can be divided into three types, which are mono-centric circle, multicenter circle and networked circle. The function of cities circle mainly reflects in the hub on the regional development and its incubator function. (2) How does cities circle evolve and what are their spatial evolution models? The development of cities circle is dynamic. Generally, there are three gradual progress from the laggard to the advanced, from the less developed to the developed, and from the immature to the mature stage. Elements comprised of cities circle represent different spatial organization, which shows different forms and construction in different development stage. The elements are the components of constructing the model of circle’s spatial structure evolution. The evolution of cities circle can be divided into discrete stage of development, agglomeration development stage, diffusion stage of development and balanced development. The subjects driving its evolution come from cluster and agglomeration in industries, gathering and diffusion of cities, and management and organization from governments. According to the theory on regional spatial structure, combined with the internal morphological structure and its characteristics in different stages of development, through the definition of spatial system elements of Wuhan metropolitan circle, the evolution of spatial structure of the cities circle is divided into five types, namely hydrophobic point evolution model, loose piece of evolution model, banding evolution model, mass evolution and tectonic evolution model. (3) What are the spatial structure characteristics in Wuhan metropolitan circle? Wuhan metropolitan circle shows variety of features with the polar nuclei structure, point-axis type structure, ring-type structure and network structure. According to the results from fractal analysis, Wuhan metropolitan circle represents size distribution, characterized by large number of cities in the middle of a sequence, the relatively-balanced population distribution, and population concentration in primate city, the number of which has more than that from theory. Each space unit in Wuhan metropolitan circle has represented random fractal structure between cities with strong spatial correlation and close connection. The centrality of spatial distribution of cities is weak. There are less number of cities near the central city of Wuhan, and more cities away from the central city of Wuhan city. There is a particularly evident characteristic in space with discrete distribution. The balance of spatial distribution of cities in Wuhan metropolitan circle represents well in eastern and western region, few in the north-south direction and regions surrounding Wuhan city, and inconspicuous in urban distribution of equilibrium. (4) What are characteristics of the accessibility of spatial structure evolution? Based on traffic network data from 1989,1995,2000,2005,2010 and 2015, by using accessibility analysis technology, the spatial pattern of accessibility between cities in Wuhan metropolitan circle are analyzed which finds that the level of accessibility in the cities circle is obviously improved with significant ring-level characteristics. The axial connection state of accessibility is forming. The regional difference of accessibility is very apparent. The spatial evolution of accessibility shows obvious structural pattern characteristic. The results suggest that the accessibility represents different response to improve road network. (5) What are the characteristics of space connection pattern evolution? Based on urban non-agricultural population data from 1989,2003, 2008 and 2013 year, the intensity of space correlation between cities is calculated. The intensity of space correlation and its changes between Wuhan city and others, and each other city is analyzed. And then the paper explores the changes of membership degree of spatial connection, representing that regions with strong connection are distributed collectively in the core region of cities circle.(6) What are the influence factors on urban spatial structure evolution and the mechanism of action? The formation and development of cities circle are influenced by many factors, mainly including natural conditions, resources endowment, economic development, traffic location, population growth and the policy guidance, etc. The spatial structure evolution of the urban circle is affected comprehensively by the forces like the restriction and adaption of the natural conditions, resource exploitation and utilization as well as complementation, urban population growth and migration, economic space agglomeration and diffusion, transport network structure and induction as well as the government decision guide and regulation, of which the social and economic development is the driving force of the spatial structure evolution of the urban circle. And the structural evolution will also affects the spatial variation.(7) Thoughts and conceptions of the spatial integration should be to guide and promote the population and the industries to gather in the regions along Yangtze River, Han River, railway and road with the strong carrying capacity, further highlight the primary center position of Wuhan as the central city in the urban circle, take Huangshi and Xiaogan as the sub-central city, take Huangsho, Ezhou, Huanggang, Xiaogan and Xianning as the municipal central cities of Wuhan urban circle, take Xiantao, Qianjiang and Tianmen as the county central cities of Wuhan urban circle and accelerate the polarization development of the cities and towns. Choose 5 development axes as the agglomeration axis and expansion axis for the town development of Wuhan urban circle and then form the networked, multi-center urban circle with functional complementation and the intensive and compact development of the urban industrial space and urban living space, mutual interspersion and integration of the agricultural space, rural settlement space as well as the landscape and ecological space as well as the mutual harmonious development of various elements through the agglomeration of the cities, towns, transportation and industries on the development axis. (8) The implementation ways of the space integration should include restructuring and optimization of urban space layout, in order to guide and coordinate interregional space planning and implement double integration from space and industry.The possible innovation points in the dissertation are as follows:(1) according to the general thinking in geography, following the research paradigm of pattern-process-mechanism-adjustment and control, the framework of dissertation on spatial structure evolution and spatial integration in Wuhan metropolitan circle is formed. Based on that framework, the elements of spatial structure and characteristics of spatial pattern in Wuhan metropolitan circle are elaborated. The general process and characteristics of spatial evolution in Wuhan metropolitan circle are analyzed. The influencing factors and its mechanisms on spatial evolution in Wuhan metropolitan circle are initially explained and analyzed. And then, the significance and the goal, basis and principle, key points and thinking, and ideas of spatial integration in Wuhan metropolitan circle are elaborated. Furthermore, the development ideas, paths and its strategies of spatial integration in the circle are proposed. The framework in the dissertation can be applied to others with the same situation of Wuhan metropolitan circle, which provides to some extent reference and innovation. (2) The simulation research of general mode on the evolution of spatial structure in cities circle, which provides theoretic basis for the research on evolution of cities circle. From the perspective of theoretic study, according to the theory of regional spatial structure, urban morphology structure in cities circle and researches on characteristics at different development stages of cities circle, spatial structure evolution mode of cities circle can be divided into five types. They are sparse-points-style evolution mode, loose-packages-style evolution mode, banding-style evolution mode, mass-style evolution mode, and tectonic-style evolution mode. The computer simulation analysis was carried on, which provides the general process of urban spatial structure evolution and rules, which has great significance to the development of theory references on planning and optimization control of cities circle. (3) Methods and techniques on development evolution research of cities circle are further integrated. Firstly, with the aid of the GIS platform to extract urban spatial information and set up analysis database, GIS spatial analysis function is fully played. Secondly, in terms of pattern analysis, the analytic hierarchy process and fractal analysis method are used. Thirdly, in terms of pattern evolution analysis, the accessibility analysis technology based on ARCGIS and spatial connection intensity are adopted. Fourthly, factor analysis method is adopted in mechanism analysis. Generally, the dissertation integrates technologies and methods on evolution analysis of cities circle, which can satisfy the need of elaborating characteristics and mechanisms on evolution of cities from different aspects, which can provide reference for similar research.
