In China, the energy structure is dominated by coal, which determines that the coal resource is the assurance of the sustainable economic development and stable social life. China is in the stage of the rapid development of industrialization, urbanization and modernization, and the problem of energy consumption structure is become increasingly prominent. The social, economic and environmental effects that arise in the large-scale and wide-range coal flows are getting more and more attentions. Recently, with the depletion of coal resources, development of the transportation, transfer of the economy gravity center, implementation of the strategy of sustainable development, the research of the coal flow has become a hot field. This paper analyzes the evolution of the spatial pattern of the inter-provincial coal flow from1980to2011. It first analyzes the changes of the basic structure in the coal flow from the angles of size and area. It concluded that the rank-size distributions of coal input and output in china are consistent with Zipf law in each chosen year. In the part two, it analyzes the distribution changes of the source regions, sink regions and transit regions. Then, using mathematical statistical and spatial statistical methods analyzes the features of the evolution of the spatial pattern from the three angles. It has indicated that the absolute difference in the expanding of the coal flow, however, the relative difference is not obvious. The analysis shows that the coal output and input are has more significant spatial autocorrelation by using the spatial autocorrelation model; and shows that the center of gravity of coal flows deviate from the geometric center by using gravity model. The paper analyzes the reasons of the conformation at the basis of the above: interregional imbalance between supply and demand of coal resources, construction of transport, coal regional price differences, and regional differences in economic structure. At last, it proposed the optimized solution:optimize the layout of China’s energy development, promote coal production center westward, construction of a modern integrated coal transportation system, reasonable adjustment of industrial structure, and improve the coal policy.
