The wood chippers are used to produce technological wood chips and are the basic equipment in papermaking and wood-based panel industries. Many studies on chippers to improve the quality of wood chips, to minimize the power consumption and to reduce its vibration and noise have been done by many researchers on all over the world in last decades. Some significant result has achieved on improving the quality of wood chips. More studies are needed to solve the problems of vibration, noise and power consumption on wood chipper. Based on the previous research, this paper discussed the vibration, noise and power consumption of chipper by testing dynamic load on traditional disc chipper. The main facts of causing vibration, noise and power consumption were found out through the testing. A theory of balanced cutting on chipper is issued out in this paper. Based on the theory, a new wood chipping disc was designed and made. Compare testing with traditional cutting disc was carried out.The main conclusions are found out by a vast amount of theoretical analyses and experimental researches: (1) The variety of load of traditional disc chipper does not balance due to the blades on traditional chipping disc cut the woods once only in the process of cutting, the width of cutting is changeable, the values of cutting force and power vary wavely, and the values of peak are very high, this is the basic reason resulting in large consumption of power, high value of vibration and noise and the unreasonable utilization of power. (2) On disc wood chipper, by changing the long blades to short blades and varying the once only cutting of cross section of log to cutting in different layers and strip by strip, thus the theoretical conception is correct to keep the cutting width unchangingly when cutting. If the blades are arranged spiraly and the distance between the blades changingly, to keep one blade ending cutting and another going into cutting at once, the aim of balanced cutting is attained. (3) Compared to traditional disc, the new-typed cutting disc designed and manufactured according to the balanced cutting theory showed in measure: either the cutting force or the cutting power, the values are low, in the range of experiment, the cutting force of new-typed disc is 1/2~1/2.6 of traditional disc s, the peak value of power is 1/2.6~1/4 of traditional discs, the power consumption is about 1/1.3~1/1.5 of traditional disc's; the waves are smoothly, the values of vibration...
