After a certain period of use, railway lines may deform geometrically due to many factors. The speed and security of the railway will be badly threatened and this may lead to dangerous consequences. It is necessary to check up and maintain railway lines at set intervals. Tamping machines are the current high-performance maintenance technology involved in hammering track ballasts. The core part of the tamper machine is the Automatic Guiding Computer (AGC). AGC's main function is to measure parameters required for the tamper machine to carry out its operations in real time, according to a fixed point on the railway line. AGC utilizes revised data which is inputted and stored in advance in order to calculate the geometrical data of the track circuit. This is given as parameters with which the control system of the tamper machine needs to work. So far however, domestic AGC systems still require further research and progress. The AGC systems of tamper machines that are currently in use are mostly imported from Plasser&Theurer, Austria. This article was based on the cooperation project between schools and enterprises, named "the research on orbit parameter automatic guiding computer system". Cooperating with China railway large maintenance machinery Co, LTD, Kunming, we independently developed and designed an AGC system which holds independent intellectual property rights. We also obtained base data to promote its performance and precision, in order to advance our competitive power.After extensive research into the theories of AGC, this article highlights what we believe are the key points in developing more advanced technology for domestic AGCs. We set a series of math models including all possibilities of linear combinations that were used in China. By use of the measurement system equipped with the tamper machine, we compute the work parameters that tamper machines needed. To analyse the way the data exchange between AGC system and work control system, it achieves data transmit in real time. Subsequently we examined the validity that all designs and methods supplied in this article from different angles, which we found to be valid. Using this we finished the whole design of the tamper machine's AGC.During the course of development, the following key points regarding AGC technology was discovered:1. Researching all possibilities of linear combination of railway track and making the math models which describe the linear combination is the base to ensure the validity of AGC. With the complex and varied terrains and landforms in China, the linear combinations are rich and varied. Therefore we set a math model library which includes all linear combinations in the frame of the Chinese standard railway design specification. Based on the measuring system that model 0832 and 093X tamper machines now being produced, we employ dynamic local reference frame to set a series of math models to calculate the versed sine, super-elevation and the degree of track elevation of each different line type that corresponding to the three-point or four-point measurement system.2. A railway track which composed by many standard curve segments in the frame of the Chinese standard railway design specification is a set of curve segments. Aimed at easy use, we build a perfect data structure according to the use of each kind of data. To compute the work parameters of each work point involves many track segments of various standard curves, thus the data structure we build should search the data near the work point quickly. That is to say, choosing a flexible data structure is important to promote the compute efficient.3. Due to the continually changing of railway track, the tamper machine has to compute the work data of each work point by real time when it is working. So the volume of computing is huge and the calculation speed is very fast. If we use traditional calculation methods, the AGC system is very difficult to compute the work parameters accurately and rapidly. Therefore we need find a fit way to calculate. According to the data of railway line and the work parameter of work machine which put in beforehand, the AGC system analyses and distinguish automatically before work. Hence, the AGC system calls the math model which most fits to the railway line. According to the real time data that the measurement system equipped with the AGC supplies, the AGC uses this math model to calculate the work parameter that the work system need. Thus we meet the real rime calculate and control need. 4. To ensure the tamper machine works uninterruptedly, the AGC system must have the powerful ability to process and exchange data in real time. Now the AGC system we used are all be imported with the tamper machine, the data structure and the data communication are the key secret technique. So, research and developing an adaptable data structure and communication way, we catch up with the international level, meeting the need of domestic and promote the technological content of the system.5.We comprehensively analyzed the AGC's functions and the work way, then independently designed the whole structure of a tamper machine's AGC system. We chose a universally acknowledged and reliable hardware Platform, use C# to complete the software design. Based on the Net Framework, we were able to finish the whole system's design and development of tamper machine's AGC system.The jobs mentioned above have all have been completed; test data shows that the AGC system we developed completely satisfy our originally developed objectives for that of a tamper machine, and have been put on the industrial market. AGC system provides a basis for further development of nationally based tamper machines. The methods with which our computing systems have been developed to carry out completely satisfy the requirements of tamper machines and their respective AGCs. Henceforth this has had great impact upon the growth and maintenance of railway systems in China. This project has provided a great step in generating domestic tamper machines, helping further in the research and development of national railways.
