Since SMA(stone matrix asphalt) was introduced in 1990's, because of its excellent anti-fatigue anti- skidding high temperature stability and anti- cracking performances, SMA has won a good evaluation and made a great development in china.On the basis of changchun-fuyu expressway surface pavement project, this paper has systematically analyzed SMA's pavement performance, by means of indoor test, optimum design and test road study, a SMA's gradation for Jilin province is achieved ,a construction management method for SMA pavement is summarized. On the analysis of other countries' SMA design methods, a design flaw is put forward.In the course of indoor test, volume design method is harnessed to control SMA as dense skeleton structure. Rutting test is used to check high-temperature stability, low-temperature crawl test to check anti-cracking. Experiment steps as following: At first, this paper has studied aggregate gradation to ensure which kind of coarse aggregates to contribute more for high temperature stability. Single diameter coarse aggregate is used to shape samples to do marshalK rutting test. According to the analysis of test results, it is difficult to decide which kind of coarse aggregate to do more contribution for SMA's high temperature. So other experiments to study SMA's attribute must be done. Secondly, a gap gradation (Lack of 2.36-4.75mm) is used to study how much function in the aggregate interference. Marshall rutting tests have been done. The test results have shown that the lack of 2.36~4.75mm aggregate doesn't reach the destination of improving high- temperature stability. So continuing test must be done further more. Thirdly, American German SMA's gradations have been systematically studied. On the basis of testing resultts, the SMA's gradation that is suitable for Jilin province has been achieved. Forth, uniform design is used to check the gradation whether or not optimum. The test results have shown that the aggregate gradation is the best gradation for Jinlin province.The paper has also researched that fiber, what role, has played in SMA.By analyzing the results. A conclusion has been reached that it is necessary to use fiber absorbing asphalt in SMA, at the same time, a series of comparing experiments about SMA AC AK and modified asphalt SMA of high temperature low temperature have been carried out. The results of experiments have shown that the performances of SMA are better than those of AC & AK.To make sure how about SMA in highway project. Test roads had been paved. After 2 years using. The SMA's effect in highway is corresponded to the results of indoor tests. SMA owns excellent performance in fact.Through a great mount of tests, the SMA's gradation summarized in this paper can satisfy the freeway construction requirement in Jilin province. The designing method in this paper can be used in other construction highway projects.
