As stated in Internal Classic (Neijing), Antagonistic and complementary action among Chinese medicinals may disclose a unique, unconventional treatment principle and strategy, which is to exploit the multiple contradictory aspects of diseases by focusing on shared characteristics so as to target at the nature of disease in the treatment. In order to solve the multiple contradictions, the conventional prohibited combination can be breached with exactly the opposite approach to various problems for comprehensive solutions. For specific diseases in different viscera, antagonistic medicinals can be combined. This unique combination brings contextualized and seemingly contradictory definition to antagonistic combination, which works by either 'attraction', toxicity-lowering function, or complementary in therapeutic actions. To study this unconventional treatment principle and strategy, we choose the combination of Flos Caryophylli (ding xiang, Clove Flower) and Radix Curcumae (yu jin, Turmeric Root Tuber) as the subject. On the one hand, these two herbs are frequently used in clinical applications; on the other hand, substantial work has been done on them. The combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae is mutual restraining, which means therapeutic potency decreases in general when combined. However, during practical exploration, clinicians have come to realize that this kind of combination is not absolute taboo in the usage of Chinese medicinals. Meanwhile, according to our literature research of these two medicinals, previous laboratory studies have been limited to volatile substances in the oil, leaving much more work to be done its soluble substances. This is also partly the incentives for us to initiate the study. This study aims to define the nature and source of antagonistic combination with theoretical and experimental research approach to study the combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae from the nineteen antagonistic pairs. The exploration of the mechanism of antagnonistic nature is crucial to relevant literature, laboratory, and clinical studies. It may provide research basis for exploring clinical application of antagonistic combination with supplementary effects, which can be attempted as a new pathway in the treatment of miscellaneous difficult diseases. This thesis is divided into four sections:The first section is a literature review on the antagonistic combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae including origins, application, theoretical and experimental studies. Controversial comments on this combination in the following times are provided as regards to clinical application and laboratory studies. Problems existing in current research of combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae. The relatively systematic record of antagonistic combination in general is presented with overview of its heritage, development, enrichment, and application. The second section is the theoretical elaboration. Based on the antagonistic combination principle quoted from Internal Classic (Neijing), the part elaborate and expand the theoretical framework of antagonistic combination in the following aspects:five flavors corresponding to five elements, yin-yang and five organs, opposite supplement theory, tonifying/reducing for five zang-organ diseases, the latter two of which originates from Internal Classic (Neijing). In this way, the theoretical connection between Internal Classic (Neijing) and the case of antagonistic combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae defines its connection in its own way.The third section is laboratory study. This part introduces the innovative experiment methodology of the soluable ingredients of antagonistic combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae. Chemical compound studies reveals the changes of active ingredients when using antagonistic combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae. This section uses scientific language to illustrate the mechanism with example of antagonistic combination of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae. Together with the theory of counter treatment from Internal Classic (Neijing), the scientific nature of this kind of combination is to be elucidated. The fourth section is the research summary and prospects. This part discusses the antagonistic combination uses medicinals of opposite properties based on the lab laboratory research of the soluable ingredients in the case of Flos Caryophylli and Radix Curcumae. However, this kind of combination should be appl ied under specified circumstances. Theoretical exploration of the nature of antagonistic combination is discussed according to relevant principles from Internal Classic (Neijing). Finally, a summary is provided on the conclusion and innovation of the study with a prospect description in the future.
