Through studying the ancient medical literature, wefound that Chinese herb "Wei Ling Xian"which was recorded in the book (On Wei Ling Xian) in the Tang Dynasty is the root of Clematis hexapetala Pall..Through investigation of the resources , it has been found that the name ei Ling Xian?has been used for 70 kinds of plants in the history and even now.Through pharmacognostical identification, species study, microscopic identification study, it has been found that the Clematis obscura Maxim. is a better resources of herb "Wei Ling Xian"than the C. chinenses and the difference has been found between them.In chemical study: The ThC-scanning has been established to determine the content of Oleanolic acid in the medicinal materials of Radix Clematidis. This method is convenient, sensitive and accurate. The study provides the a lot of guidelines on evaluating quality of Radix Clematidis,and has built foundation of quality standard.Analyzed by GCS, 50 components were determined from the root of Clematis chinensis,29 components from the stem Qf C.chinenses,53 components from the root of C.obscura,and 16 components from the stem of C.obscura, 47 components from the root of C.temiflora var.mandsharica.By pharmacodynamics studing , the efThct of root and stem Ctematis chinenses in killing pain has been found,and the root Clematis obscura is better than it. The pharmacological studies on the root of C.chinensesC.obscura C.hexapetala and root C.temiflora var. mandsharica have been carried out in studying the capillary microcirculation in the abdomen cavity of small mice.Through experimeifl of &APD, better result has been found in identification of th C.chinenses, C.obscura and C.temiflora var.maidshurica.With the afrve.iudies, The :athor suggests tht the root of Clematis xapeta4be useds the herb medicine with ttie name ian TUc "Wei Ling Xian", but not "Wei Ling Xian",for it has different, chemical ingredients and curing effect. Theing Xia Miaothe stem and folium of?C.chinensis can not be used as the herb of Radii Clematidis.
