Herba Centipedae is an annual herbaceous plant of Centipeda minima Lour.(Compositae). It is pungent in taste and warm in nature. It has the actions of opening orifices, expelling cold and stopping coughing. It has been used as a fine remedy for cold, headache, chronic nasalallergy and cough. In order to search for bioactive constituents from the plant, the systemic chemical investigation had been carried out and 51 compounds were isolated and 27 of them were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods. Among them, Thymohydroquinone 3-O-β-6'-acetyl-Glc(1) and Thymohydroquinone 6-O-β-6'-acetyl-Glc(2) are new compounds, 2-methoxytetra hydrohelenalin(3) is a new natural compound, 17 compounds obtained from the titled plant for the first time were determined as follows: Zataroside-A(4), Zataroside- B(5), Thymol 3-O-β-glucoside(6), Dihydrohelenalin(7), ethyl caffeate(12), (-)-cis-Chrysanthenol-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(13), Methy 3, 5-Di-O-caffeoylquinate(16), 3, 5-Di-O-caffeoylquinicacid(17), 2-amino-4-methyl- pentanoic acid(18), 2-amino-3-phenyl-propionic acid(19), 4-amino-4-carboxychro man-2-one(20), Luteolin(21), Tricin(23), 3-O-methylquercetin(24), Quercetin(25), Kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(-1→6)-β-D- glucopyrano side(26), Rutin(27). In addition, we investigated the biosynthesis pathway of secondary metabolites in C.minima.Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides Lam. is a whole herb plant of Umbelliferae. It has the actions of clearing away heat, excreting dampness and has been used for arcuatus, dysentery and cough. In the search of bioactive constituents from the title plant, 28 compounds were isolated and 14 of them were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods. Among them, Chlorogenic acid methyl ester(1), 5-Hydroxymaltol(2), (-)-Angelicoidenol 2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(3), n-butyl-β-D- fructopyranoside(4), Apigenin (5), Kaempferol(9), 4,2',4'-trihydroxychalcone(10) and Oleanolic acid (11) are isolated from the plant for first time.Moreover, activities of C. minima and H.sibthorpioides to inhibit LA795 were determined by MTT assay in vitro, the results of antitumor experiments showed that PE, EtOAc extracts of C. minima had strong activity and the compound 8 from C. minima revealed strong activity to inhibit LA795, extracts of H.sibthorpioides and the other compounds showed weak activity.
