Jing Lii Yi Xiang(《经律異相》)is the Buddhist reference books collected and com,p.iled by Bao Chang, a monk living during Liang Dynasty in South Dynasties.It's also the earliest reference book retained up to now,which is highly valuable to documentation. In addition, since this book with verified time of compilation and large size, concerns figures ranging in social classes and narrates stories popularly, it can reflect abundent language facts more fully during the Eastern Han Dynasty and Liang Dynasty.Thus it is a quite ideal material for Medieval Chinese research.The subject tries to explore lexicology, exegesis and Chinese philology of Medieval Chinese and it is also the analysis of varia lectio in Jing Lu Yi Xiang(《经律異相》)from linguistics angle by further research on varia lectio in Jing Lu Yi Xiang(《经律異相》)This article firstly discusses how to define and research the varia lectio and present research, theoretical and practical value of this discussion. And then reorganizing Bao Chang's life profile,his works,the compiling background and version origins,this article analyzes types and cause of varia lectio in Jing Lii Yi Xiang(《经律異相》)and demonstrates the great value of varia lectio to arranging and researching ancient books.Thirdly the significance of varia lectio research for linguistics is verified from linguistics point of view.The evolution of particular characters in popular form is also clarified by explicating some difficult words,thereby finging out the deficiencies and errors in some large-sccale Chinese reference books, such as The Grand Dictionary of Chinese Characters(《汉语大字典》), Chinese Dictionary(《汉语大词典》).Finally twenty six typical examples of varia lectio are explained.It is the first time this article divided defining the types of varia lectio and its cause practically and theoretically, describing the varia lectio systematically. Linguistically,comprehensive study has been made on the value of varia lectio to philology, exegesis, Chinese history and documentics avoiding only emphasizing emendation.
