This dissertation analyzes the relationship between Chinese ancient wood constructions and Chinese landscape painting. This painting style is herein after referred as "Chinese wood construction-landscape painting." Because this dissertation is written from the perspective of an experienced painter, many parts of the following chapters focus on painting methods.Since the Tang and Song dynasties wood constructions have become common themes in Chinese landscape paintings. The author examines relevant artists and paintings regarding their significance in evolving and combining wood constructions with Chinese landscape paintings. Additionally, he analyzes the impacts these artists and paintings have on expressing the charming beauty and researches their influences on art development.The dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter summarizes the situation of wood constructions in Chinese landscape painting, which includes their origin and their consolidating with landscape painting. Furthermore, the characteristics of these paintings are discussed and an overview on painting tools is provided.The second chapter uses traditional Chinese methodologies, for instance the typical Chinese perspective of'seeing things while moving around,"to analyze the space concept of Chinese wood construction-landscape paintings.Next, artist Guo Zhongshu's achievements towards Chinese wood construction-landscape painting are discussed in chapter three.Chapter four analyzes paintings from artists of different epochs and their relevance towards Chinese wood constructions-landscape paintings. It evaluates the achievements of these paintings regarding development and continuance of the spirit of this combined painting style.In chapter five, it is argued that with the decay of traditional Chinese wood constructions-in other words with the decline of China's second nature"-new painting materials, styles and topics evolved, while the traditional spirit survived. Consequently this reveals the vitality of traditional Chinese painting.The author writes from the perspective of a professional painter, who chose to discuss ancient wood constructions on landscape paintings that are representative works of Chinese wood construction-landscape paintings. These over thousand years old master pieces are still important for studying temporary garden-landscape paintings and provide important thoughts.
