The thesis mainly studies the manors in Ivan Bunin's works. It starts with Bunin'smanor complex, follows a chronological sequence of his writing, analyzes the theme ofthe manors in his works, and elaborates on the forming process of the image of themanors in his writing from simple lines to delicate descriptions and from plain existenceto soul palace full of vitality. The image of the manors in Bunin's writing also evolves along with the differentphases of his creating life. In his early short stories, it seemed rough and wasdemonstrated in dreams. Later in short novels, it appeared real and clear, and the fate ofmanors wound through the whole story just like the musical theme ran through thesymphony. Then in his novel The Life of Arseniev, it became comprehensive, specificand clear. He also reached his peak in portraying the manors which almost includes allthe features of manors in different phases in his works. Finally, in his later works—DarkAvenues, a collection of short stories, it has become the background of the wholecollection which has been deeply rooted in the soul of the protagonist (the authorhimself). It symbolized Russia, Bunin's missing homeland and the whole collection hasbeen the resting place for the manors. The conclusion is that: the portrait of the image of the manors in different phasesof Bunin's works contributed respectively to his manor palace; they laid a foundation, established the structure, decorated meticulously interior and exterior design, and finallyinstilled souls. So, the manor in Bunin's writing is not only a place for residence, butalso the holy palace with souls and it lives forever in his works.
