| One of the very important characteristics in the evolution of Chinese characters is its multiplying derivation, in which the cognate derivation is considered the nucleus.By means of focusing on the deep analysis of the cognate derivation in Ancient Chinese Character, this paper shows great significance to the revelation of some rules in its evolution as well as to the theoretical construction of Chinese philology.This paper,covering ancient cognate derivation characters from Ying & Zhou Dynasties to Qin & Han Dynasties,presents the ways and modes of analysis and induction,and further deliberates the associative aspects of derivation characters,on the basis of the detailed textual research.Two units are branched in this paper,the epitome of which is presented below:I .It suggests that the cognate characters, by differentiating from the characters which always co-occur with them in a confused way,should be switched to the ontological study.And then these cognate characters are of great necessity to be re-demarcated.In this sense,the cognate characters refer to that the ancient Chinese characters in the process of practice generate dividedly a number of other characters which have the meaningful relations with one another in meaning and form.II .This paper, presenting the deep analysis of examples,also infers three main ways of engendering the derivations which are the derivation caused by the extented meaning,the derivation by the ideographic trait,and the derivation by the naming system to physical objects.And then the theoretical summarization is given.III.The mode of the cognate derivation is discussed and summed up from theplanely angle.This paper presents four derivational modes,which are addition, omission,transformation and simultaneous obtainment.Throngh further discussing each of them,this paper points out that different modes may give different functions to their derivations.IV .The cognate derivation is a dynamic process of development,so this paper stresses much on calligraphic derivation,and intra-semantic derivation, polybasics and gradation and reversibility of the cognate derivation.In this complex system,calligraphic derivation and intra-semantic adjustment often do not occur synchronically,even appear reversibly.Because of the polybasics of the cognate derivation,it is of necessity to analyze the occurrence from the angle of language,character and culture etc.V.The cognate derivation closely correlates with the mode of forming lexicon.The mode of ideographic derivation,during the period in which ideographic formation enjoys the dominance,makes great development in its various kinds as well as in its capacity to form characters.The mode of picto-phonetic derivation,durmg the period in which picto-phonetic formation takes the lead,is perfected as well as evolve into the main pattern of derivation.VI.Cognate derivation is also regulated by the inner rules of language.The grammatical traits of Ancient Chinese,more or less,give influence on cognate derivation such as active and passive derivation various giving-accepting derivation,and derivation on the integration of noun, verb and adjective. Meanwhile the Chinese lexical traits provide the necessary prerequisite to cognate derivation,which,yet along with Double-syllability of Chinese vocabulary,gradually falls into the declination.VII.In the second unit,this paper demonstrates a comprehensive compare and contrast on a great number of the cognate derivation characters,including personal understanding on cognate derivation,and the formation and the paraphrasis of Ancient Chinese characters.To put it succinctly,the whole paper begins with the study on cognate derivation from the periphery of its kind,and further explores the inner rules,as well as gives the bird's-eye views to cognate derivation and it related systems of formation of Chinese characters and language.The line of the text is on the basis of the microcosmic analysis and the macrscopic summation from the periphery to the center.It did not done e...
