This dissertation is a systematic study on the formal evolution of Chu characters,including a comparison of Chu scripts and styles of calligraphy during the course of formal evolution with those of other regions on a synchronic level,a diachronic reconstruction of the relationship between Chu characters and Shangzhou characters,Chu characters and Qinhan characters,and a comprehensive analysis on the phenomena emerged during the formal evolution of Chu characters.Some rules on the formal evolution of Chu characters have been summed up and a more clear understanding on the characteristics and the lines of formal evolution of Chu characters may hope to get. Our study on this problem becomes the first step of the investigation of the history and evolutionary rules of Chinese characters during ChunQiu-ZhanGuo period.The dissertation is made up of three parts.I .The synchronic comparison of the Chu scripts and styles of calligraphy with those of other regions.In this section,we have discriminated names,nature and historical development of mang kinds of Chu styles of calligraphy, such as bird-insectlike characters,tadpolelike characters,Zhuan characters,Li characters,Old characters,Zhou characters,and have made a comparison of Chu characters with characters of other regions on a synchronic level to manifest the characteristics and the developmental tendency of Chu scripts and styles of calligeaphy.II .The diachronic evolution of the form of Chu characters.In this section,we have discussed inheritance development and the cause of being unified by Qin characters of Chu characters.III.The internal rules of the formal evolution of Chu characters.In this section,we have analysed the curious changes of the forms of Chu characters and have summed up some rules of evolution: simplifica-tion,multiplicity,dissimilction,pictophonetization,the first three parts are mainly changes based on the original form,and the last one is the method of reproducing new characters.
