Human's language is closely related to cognition. Language is a tool indispensable in the development of human society. Climax is an important category that people generalize and analogise from the development of the world and human society, and also a significant ladder that we use language to ~K)if!l and J3SIip. the world. This thesis discusses the climax category in Chinese, with the combination of description and explanation, taking semantic meaning as compendium and sentence pattern as c Because people use language not only to think and communicate, but also to know the world in which they live. Therefore, we have to search the rules and laws of the world in language use.Based on a general description of the definition and characteristics of the climax category in Chinese, this thesis explores the semantic and form system of Chinese. Meanwhile, this thesis gives an overall review of the climax category from the perspective of text. Finally, it analyses the semantic and form patterns and relevant cognitive conditions, thereby it summarizes the form system, the semantic system, and the cognitive condition system. Taking into consideration the need of research of climax category, this thesis also gives a diachronic review of some realization forms of climax. Meanwhile, it explores and analyses some typical forms of climax and semantic coherence from a grammatical perspective.This thesis is divided into ten chapters.Chapter One is introduction and briefly introduces the general idea, scope, starting point, principles, methods and resources of this research paper.Chapter Two is a comprehensive presentation of the climax category. It sorts out the research of the climax category since 马氏文通. It divides the research into three parts: the research on compound sentences, the research on climax and the research on sentence groups. This chapter summarizes the characteristics and achievements of each part, and makes a thorough comments on them from the perspective of the climax category.Chapter Three describes with quotations and analyses the definition and characteristics of climax, and points out the realizing and semantic features of the climax category.Chapter Four is a solid analysis of the semantic system of the climax category in terms of logic semantic basis system of the climax category, its subjective and objective aspects, its semantic system and the degree of climax.Chapter Five explores the marked and unmarked forms of the climax category with the efforts to analyse all the means of relevance and expression of the climax category in Chinese.Chapter Six is a discussion of the climax category in terms of text. It analyses the patterns and characteristics of inner-sentence, inter-sentence and sentence-paragraph climax in a macroscopic manner.Chapter Seven is a discussion of the typical sentence pattern of climax "not only ...but also". Based on abundant resources, we take it as the representative sentence of the climax category.Chapter Eight is an analytical research of three special sentence patterns, namely, "not only...but...", anti-climax, "..., not to say..."and their realization forms.Chapter Nine is an analysis and exploration of three other special sentence patterns, namely, " '连...X...' climax", "排除句式, of climax", "'甚至''句式", and views them in the terms of their diachronic development and their functions. Grammatical analysis is offered where necessary.Chapter Ten summarizes the whole thesis and points out its shortcomings.At the end of the thesis are bibliography and appendix.
