Zhang Shi-zhao is a famous person of great importance in modern Chinese history. He has deeply influenced his times. This thesis, taking him and his newspapers & magazines as topic, is expected to make a complete study on his journalism practice and journalism theory. The author hopes that this study can deepen the "Zhang Shi-zhao Research" in vertically and richen it in horizontally, can make up and be of value to Chinese Journalism History, supply the modern journalist undertakings with historical use for reference. This thesis is made up of nine chapters containing twenty-three sections. The following is the abstract:From chapter one to chapter five, Zhang Shi-zhao's journalism practice, from "Su Bao Newspaper" to "Jia Tin Weekly", covering nearly 30 years, is centralized adopted. In Chapter One, we discussed Zhang's journalism activity during 1903-1905.The Su Bao Event is well known to all, but Zhang, as the key person of it, has never been paid enough attention to, thus we studied him for the first time, and we are convinced that the facts has been made clear. The reason why Zhang changed into a scholar from a revolutionary, is also concerned.Chapter Two, taking Zhang's masterpieces as example, we try a study on his achievements in the field of ancient Chinese linguistics and logics. Thus the relationship between knowledge and journalism is discovered. It is the above achievements that made Zhang a famous journalist with characteristics.Chapter Three, Zhang's journalism practice during "Minli Newspaper" and "the Independent Weekly" is concerned. Zhang firmly insisted that a journalist should make comments neutrally, fairly and independently without discrimination and prejudice. In addition, two important problems are solved for the first time: why Zhang left "Minli Newspaper" and Zhang had nothing to do with the later transformation of "the Independent Weekly".Chapter Four, Zhang's journalism practice in "Jia Yin Monthly" is the chief subject. During this period, Zhang's article style and fair comments became a significant model that intellectuals took as their example. The Monthly became the most famous magazine after Liang Qi-chao's "Xinmin Cong Bao" and Chen Du-xiu's "New Youth Monthly". From the Monthly, people have felt that a new culture movement is coming near. Under the permission of Zhang, Chen Du-xiu and Li Da-zhao, the two originators of the Communist Party of China, began to pre-propaganda New Culture Movement. In Chapter Five, we are to discuss Zhang's journalism practice during 1917-1927. Zhang's idea of compromise, which formed in "Jia Yin Daily", is operated into details. Based on our study, we are now ableto draw a conclusion that Zhang's idea of compromise was nothing but a political principle. It wasn't a political thought. Zhang broadcast it only with the aim to fight against Yuan Shi-kai. But he finally failed. During "Jia Yin Weekly", he overthrew all his former ideas, because of the disaster of the First World War and frequent resurgence of monarchy in China. He began to negate the representative system in politics, oppose the New Culture Movement in cultural field and pursue the policy of "agriculture country" in economics. The defects of his theory and his wrong assurance of Chinese reality led to his failure at last. From Chapter Six to Chapter Nine, the thesis mainly discusses Zhang's journalism theory. In Chapter Six, we are to make a throughout research on Zhang's pure journalism theory, including its origin, main contents, and his brillia nt exposition on journalism freedom, the relationship between journalism and law, the quality requirements of journalists, and so on. Many of these expositions are still enlightening to our present journalism undertakings.Chapter Seven, Zhang's theory of journalism professional work is deliberated. It generally contains how to do well in journalism, that is, how to write a report, how to engage a newspaper or magazine, how to deal with the contradictions between social beneficial result and economic effectiveness. Zhang'...
