This paper concerns the understanding and translation of"fuzzy"terms in news reporting."Fuzzy"language refers to forms of language whose exact meaning bears no sharply defined boundaries. As a matter of fact, fuzziness is an inherent attribute of human languages as well as human thinking. Since the advent of Zadeh's Fuzzy Sets, more and more scholars have studied fuzzy phenomena from different perspectives such as fuzzy linguistic language, fuzzy rhetoric, and fuzzy mathematics, to name just a few. However, on the basis of fuzzy theory and its associated theories, this paper gives top priority to probing into fuzzy terms in news reporting. After this, the paper also tries to suggest practical tactics on how to translate fuzzy words on the assumption that there is a close connection between fuzzy theory and translation studies. To reach this end, the paper takes four main steps:First, the paper theoretically discusses the origin of fuzzy theory and its associated theories, before analyzing the definitions of fuzziness and the relationship between precision and fuzziness.Next, the paper, based on a wealth of first-hand examples from influential newspapers and magazines, highlights the importance of the use of fuzzy terms in news reporting by demonstrating that the use of fuzzy terms conforms to the inherent properties of news reporting. Then, the paper devotes much space to the discussion of understanding of fuzzy terms in news reporting from the perspective of cognition in nineteen aspects with a great multitude of examples.Lastly, based on the aforementioned discussions, the paper sets forth seven tactics for the translation of fuzzy terms in English journalism under the guidance of the fundamental theories and criteria of translation, with translated press clippings.
