The Tang dynasty was a period with a prosperous culture and literature, during which the language, as the carrier of culture and literature, was also rich and varied. Of them, archaic words from Literary Tales of The Tang were a new & very important research field, the value of which was worth paying attention to.On the basis of research achievements by our predecessors, the paper went on studying and making a breakthrough in the width and depth. Careful reading of Literary Tales of The Tang has led the author to discover an inexhaustible treasure trove of words and expressions with distinctive meanings and usages that are not dealt with in various lexicographical works.The paper had 5 chapters. The first chapter generally described archaic words from Literary Tales of The tang. The second chapter was a focal and difficult point of the paper, which consists of more than 280 words, the paper explained their contextual meaning tentatively. The third & fourth chapter further investigated and studied many common words from two aspects', the relation between words and culture, the relation between words and forms of literature. The final chapter found and collated more than 60 textual mistakes. The research showed that archaic words from Literary Tales of The Tang played an important role in the development of Chinese vocabulary.On methodology, traditional methods (such as philology, exegetics, textual criticism etc.) and modern methods (such as lexicology, semantics etc.) were applied in the study. Furthermore, both synchronic study and diachronic study were united in the paper and all these developed the range of archaic words' study.
