Located in the northwest of China, Gansu-Ningxia-Qinghai region distributed many nationalities from ancient times. The pluralistic integral feature of the Chinese nations vividly reflected in this region. Speaking in a sense, present multi-nation structure in this region is a typical miniature of the pluralistic integral pattern of the Chinese nations. Guiding by professor Fei Xiaotong's theoretical frame concerned the pluralistic integral pattern of the Chinese nations, using the method of ethnohistory, combining with other interrelated subject theory, according to rich and accurate historical data, this dissertation approached the historical process of multi-nation structure in this region in Yuan-Ming-Qing dynasty from some angles. The dissertation carded and revealed the complex ethnic-historical phenomenon and concrete process about the interlock-mix together of multi-nation, pluralistic assemblage, multi-level polarization in this region in an all-around way. It analyzed and summarized the feature and regularity of the taking-shape of multi-nation structure in this region, and tried to offer some useful clues and enlightenment about the taking-shape history of the Chinese nations. The dissertation consists of three parts: preface, main exposition and conclusion. In the preface, the writer explained the origin of the dissertation, its basic content and significance, general research situation in internal and external academic circles, time and space limits of the dissertation, the method, the sources of data and the research difficulties. The main exposition is divided into seven chapters: Chapter one introduced the natural-geographical conditions of the Gansu-Ningxia-Qinghai region, the activities of main nations in this region before Yuan dynasty and the historical background. Chapter two to five focused on the taking-shape history and development of the multi-nation structure in this region in Yuan-Ming-Qing dynasty. Chapter six expounded the economic and cultural exchanges among the nations in that time, and these exchanges how to resulted in the taking-shape and development of the pluralistic integral pattern in this region. Chapter seven discussed the effect of multi-nation structure in this region caused by the pluralistic religions, especially Tibet Buddhism and Islam. In the conclusion, the writer briefly summarized the taking-shape of multi-nation structure in this region in above time, and its "pluralistic integral" feature.
