The Clause Oriented Approach To Complete Translation

The clause oriented approach to complete translation studies the central role of clause in the three stages of translation, i.e. the governing force of clauses in comprehension and expression and its intermediary force in transformation. Besides introduction and conclusion, the dissertation is composed of five chapters. Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 are the most important parts that cover the major topics.In the introduction the author thinks that the key problem of complete translation is the transformation governed by clauses. Verifying the clause oriented approach through examples of translation among English, Chinese and Russian, it summarizes the relations between clause and complete translation, hence makes clear the object of the present research.Taking the process and unit of complete translation as the starting point, Chapter 1 probes into the clause oriented approach from linguistics, thinking studies, translatology and corpora in translation studies.Chapter 2 examines in three sections the linking role of clause between the preceding and the following parts of sentences. The first section describes the comprehension strategy of complete translation. The second section examines the function of clause in understanding word and phrase. The comprehension of clause is based on the comprehension of word and phrase, whereas the former governs the comprehension of the latter. The third section reviews the connecting role of clause in the understanding of the original text. While clause helps the understanding of compound sentence, the latter also restricts the understanding of the former. So is the relationship between clause and sentence groups.Chapter 3 brings to light the intermediary and transforming functions of clause in trans-lingual communications. It is divided into eight sections. Section 1 to Section 3 discuss the thinking background of trans-lingual communication and the strategy of complete translation. Section 4 shows the transformation mechanism between word and clause, the former being translated into the latter and vice versa. Likewise, Section 5 displays the transformation mechanism between phrase and clause. And Section 6, Section 7 and Section 8 reveal the transformation mechanism between clauses, complex sentence and clause, sentence group and clause, respectively.Chapter 4 examines the connecting funption of clause in the process of expression. It consists of three sections. Section 1 describes the expression strategy. Section 2 investigates the linking role of clause in the TT expression. Clause restricts the choice of word whereas word facilitates the organization of clause. Similarly, clause controls the making of phrase while phrase establishes the structure of clause. Section 3 talks about the relations between clause and complex sentence and sentence group. It argues that they are interdependent with one another. Clause is closely restricted by complex sentence and remotely controlled by sentence group.
