This research has five chapters ( about twenty- one sections )not including the introduction and the conclusion. It analyzes Li Panlong in detail ,a leader of the literary arena in the Ming Dynasty, from his experiences to his way of thinking to his literary creations. The content is arranged as follows:The introduction briefs the status, significance and method of this research. On the premise that there is no monograph about Li Panlong in the mainland, the present author used the existing research materials to determine which aspects of Li Panlong's life to study.Chapter 1: Investigation into Mr. Li's experiences. With the principle of "comment the man and the world ", his life can be divided into five stages according to where Li lived. Two main periods are as follows: the first being when he was in office and the second being when he had retired. Me was in office in the capital during the period of Shunde (1546-1556). In this period , he tried to change the general mood of society and brought to light the significance of "back- to- the- ancients". The Later Seven-Poet Club, which he established, was the climax of the "back- to- the- ancients movement". He retired being an official during the period of Lixia (1558-1567). At this time , he worked hard for literary creation and tried to bridge the poetic forms between the north and the south of China. Mr. Li served in office for 3 terms for a total 16 years . When he began his first term, he was 32 years old and had just successfully passed the highest official examinations. His third term ended when he passed away ( at 57 years of age). During his time of service, he was law-abiding, incorruptible and intelligent.Chapter 2: The printing and popularity of Mr. Li's works. The popularity of some of his works reflects the changing literary atmosphere of that time. This chapter explains the significance of philology and looks at how Mr. Li collected edited poetry anthologies. This chapter explains how he compiled the scattered writings and the annals. Chapter 3: Study on Mr. Li's view of literature. First of all , the present author analyses how the times ,environment and the influence of Confucianism shaped Mr. Li's literature . Secondly, he summarizes five main aspects of Mr. Li's viewpoint. First, literature should assist politics, but it also should provide enjoyment. Second , literature should move people — poetry was a tool for conveying ambition and for moving the readers . Third, regarding the relationship between reason and rhetoric , Mr. Li held an extreme opinion—" he preferred rhetoric to reason ". While he thought the best poems were those which were reasonable and fluent, which were " simple and elegant in harmony". He was originally motivated by a desire to go against the Confucian school of idealist philosophy of the Song and Ming Dynasties. Fourth, he thought that when writing poetry ,one should use a noble and ancient style, and should convert his literary style to suit the rule of the poem. Because of his talent, he was also to use the rules of the poetry, combined with his unique style of writing to createexcellent poetry. Fifth , in order to create noble artistic literature , Mr. Li thought one should change from using a secular to using a noble style of writing. He believed there are two principles in literary creation . One is to discard the dross and select the essential and to achieve mastery through a comprehensive study of a subject. The other is to not only keep an eye on creating the poem, but also to pay attention to other things. Li Panlong carried forward the revival of the Seven-Poet Group's poetry by compiling the ''Deletion of the Present and Ancient Poems" anthology. This was his greatest contributionChapter 4: An analysis of Mr. Li 's poems. Mr. Li wrote over 2000 poems The present author analyzes some of his poetry about frontier lands and some of the Chinese yuefu poems After studying and dialectically analyzing the content of his poems according to their style and theme, the present author thinks the artistic values of each of his poems is different. The Chinese yuefu modeled after the ancients has many recommendations but few changes. His poems with seven characters to a line have true feelings and rich content and thus are better than those with five characters. He also wrote e excellent poetry using the modern style and the seven-character quatrains and octaves. The only fault of his poetry was that he used old imagery and an...
