Francois Cheng, the only academician of Asian origin of the French Academy, composed creative works in beautiful and pure French. He made huge contribution to the intercourse of Chinese and French cultures through his widely covered works, which include creation of poetry, roman, research on Chinese classic poetry and painting, translation and introduction of Chinese poems. It's worthwhile to research Frangois Cheng's valuable works. In this thesis, we analyze and discuss his work on Chinese classical poetry, which includes his research on the structure of the language and his translation of Chinese classical poetry, to make it clear the contribution of his works to the intercourse of Chinese and French cultures. We draw the following conclusions after analyzing:The most prominent feature of Francois Cheng's research on Chinese classical poetry is use of analyzing methods which are originated in the West and include general linguistics, structuralism and semeiology. The use of general linguistics in Frangois Cheng's works which were published in the 70s of the 20th century, is manifested in applying the doctrine of the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure about the distinction of "les langues et la langue", considering the Chinese classical poetry as one kind of specific language, and calligraphy, painting, mythology, and music as different kinds of specific languages born from the language of Chinese classical poetry. According to Francois Cheng, the relation between the languages of Chinese classical poetry and calligraphy, painting, is that the latter is born from and enriches the former; they both embody the general system of the Chinese language. In this way, Francois Cheng relates different Chinese classical arts into an organic integration. His work provides a bright prospect in re-considering and research of all the Chinese classical artistic forms.Francois Cheng's second use of general linguistics is embodied in furthering the theory of resemblance and contiguity of Roman Jacobson. Francois Cheng considers the language of Chinese classical poetry a chain of a series of significant signs, a self-satisfying system, in which the images of metaphor are engendered according to the principle of resemblance, and they are connected in the poem through contiguity.
