Qinxuan Fu Study

Qin/Xuanfu (1906-1998) was a successful artist, historian and educationist of fine arts in Chinese modern times. The thesis, taking Qin/Xuanfu as the object of study, elaborates his researches on the history and theories of fine arts as well as the evolvement of his artistic style.The article begins with the changes of Chinese educational system in modern times and the transformation of ideas for cultivating talented persons, analyzes the intellectual structure of Qin/Xuanfu during the period of his being educated, based on which Qin carried out his researches on the history and theories of fine arts; the article also inquires into the causes and process of his taking a fancy to art in the context of art education in modern times. On the basis of above-mentioned analyses, the article dissects Qin/Xuanfu in two aspects from the cultural point of view, that is, as a new-type person with ability and as a traditional literator. The author the two parts constitute the base for Qin/Xuanfu to make great achievements in the theory and practice of art.The thesis then expounds the course and the range of his researches on the art history, and divides them into three parts: art criticism, the study of art history and specific investigations. Based on the interpretation of documents left behind by Qin, the thesis classifies systematically, combining with the concepts of artistic theory and creation in modern times, the ideas, methods and features of Qin's studies, and concluds that his researches had close relations with the artistic creation and art education in different historical stages; his researches represented the highest standard of art history studies in particular historical stages.Thirdly, the aothor holds that the artistic creation of the first generation of oil painters in the last century were influenced by social changes and almost hidden from view. The thesis reveals the cause of the evolution of his artistic style, his artistic features as wellas the differences and ties among various periods by way of analyzing his works of art from the three different period of his artistic creation.The thesis points out that we should repraise and orientate Qin's contributions and achievements in the fields of art history, art education and artistic creation in the new context of Chinese art history in the end, which is of great significence to the researches of art history and aesthetic education as well as artistic creation in the present age.
