The dissertation expounds in details the problem of dualism in the works of Bakhtin, and defines its significance of linking traditional and the contemporary in the history of ideas from the dimensionality. In part one and part two, this dissertation analyzes the poetics of carnival culture andcarnival literature of Bakhtin's the Rabelais Study and Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, and holds the view that dualism is a basic concept of Bakhtin's poetics and a basic category of his philosophical thought. Dualism goes through every part of Bakhtin's discussion on the problem of carnival, embodying his unique artistic view and philosophical perspective, and is a corner stone for him to build a mansion of carnival poetics. In the Rabelais Study, he points out that Gargantua and Pantagruel derives from the tradition of mass culture in the Middle Ages, represented by carnival, and only with this cultural angle can this book be unscrambled. The function of Gargantua and Pantagruel of overthrowing Catholics and the government in the Middle Ages derives from the profound inherent dualism of folk carnival. It is a Janus who has two faces, and the past the future, death and birth, caducity and youth, destruction and rebirth and so on, the two poles of everything co-exists in the double-faced image, in the structure of dualism. This is represented by the coexistence of abuse and praise of language in carnival, by the phenomenon of king and buffoon as one in the carnival image and works of canivalization works and by the co-existence of birth and death factors in the grotesque body in carnival and other mass culture. The cosmic view of carnival affirms and blazons forth the physical, reproductive vital force and energy of the lower world that represents the mass and denies and attacks the spiritual, dead molder and downfall of the upper world that represents the church and government. Bakhtin believes that this is where the progress of Rabelais' works lie.In Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, Bakhtin further points out that the heavy description of dramatis personae that has a double personality in Dostoevsky's works is due to the artistic standpoint of carnival and dialogue of the author with observation of life. The type of literature of carnivalization contains ironical simulation to shape the image of the dramatis personae with a double personality. Dialogism is a basic existing mode of dramatis personae in his works. By means of dialogism, the dramatis personae establish her relationship with others. Based on profound dialogism, not only her own image is visualized but also the others'. The world is made of "my image in my own eyes" (?), "my image in others' eyes" (?) and "others' image in my eyes" (?) . However, "my image in others' eyes" and "others' image in my eyes" are established by "me" and become part of "me" and "person in body" (?) . Therefore, the self-image of dramatis personae is divided into two parts, "person in body" and "my self are closely linked and co-existing and thus comes the double personality. From macroscopical double personality to the microcosmic and personal one, that is, dualism, Dualism is a basic measure of value in Bakhtin's research of carnival culture and carnivalization literatureIn the third part, this dissertation expounds the unique connotation of Bakhtin's dualism category and analyzes the philosophical and cultural background of his dualism thought. By linking his discussion on dualism problem and behavioral philosophy of early times, the meaning of his dualism thought appears in the macro context of the whole Western philosophical and...
