Inquiries Into Lv Sibai In The Context Of Chinese Art Education In The 20～(th) Century

There were many vague personages in the history of art itself and art education of the 20th century in China, Lv SiBai, as a professor in a university, normally should not have been neglected, for he played an important part in the art history. His name, however, was always bypassed in the extant historical records accompanied by the empty description of the Republic of China. After 1949, his works were prevented from being observed by the spectators for various reasons, which made the character and his works vague and known to few people. We nowadys should reconsider the great contributions he had made to Chinese art education for decades and his oil paintings with a distinctive style created at his leisure in the context of the times, thus we can get some ideas of his personality during his lifetime of frustrations.The dissertation inquiries into a single person—Lv SiBai, beginning with thedivision of his individual historical processes into three periods—that is the periodof studying in France, the period of the Republic of China and that of the new stage in relation to the three parts: his lifestory, his artistic creation and his educational activities.The author is mainly concerned with the following issues: firstly, Lv's works of art, as important tangible evidences and image documents, are the focal points of the research. The author intends to understand better the style, the traditions, the transformation as well as internal basis and external influences by contrasting Lv's works of art, articles and some other records with the historical materials of his contemporaries. Secondly, the author pays more attention to the relations between Lv SiBai and nationism trend of thought. Lv's artistic creation and education once were in concert with the main trend of Chinese oil paintings, and he was the pioneer and leader of the nationization of Chinese oil paintings. He had explored the nationizating way of Chinese oil paintings all his life and in the meantime developed initiatively local themes, both of which were his acdemic aims in terms of the aesthetic education in colleges and universities. We can find the orgins of realism oil paintings in local style in his early artistic practice. The thesis also reveals Lv's artistic positions and practice in the historical trend by means of his speeches and articles. Thirdly, Lv SiBai went with the wax and wane of Chinese art education in a sense. He devoted himself to the academic researches as well as his imparting knowledge and cultivating the talents without attracting public attention, and finally made great contribitions to Chinese art education and social education.The author expects to fill the incomplete phase of history , to make celar a vague character and to engrave the excellent works on our minds, which will enrich the history of fine arts and aesthetic education, and will be conducive to the improvement of relevent academic standards.
