This thesis takes Chinese comparative fine arts (CCFA) in the 20th century as the subject, reveals the opportunities and challenge the subject confronts with, presents its significance and value in the history and culture throughout the whole century, summarizes the achievements and analysis problems and deflects in this field, so as to promote the establishment of CCFA as a discipline. The result of the research indicates that the history of CCFA in the 20th century is a reflection of social reform in the field of fine art. The trend that the western culture spread to the Orient gradually gives birth to CCFA, and the modernization of Chinese fine arts promotes its evolution. To discuss the similarity and difference between Chinese paintings and western paintings, and to study the communication between them are focal points of CCFA. However, the study on CCFA still remains to be spontaneous and fumbling even nowadays. Thus the primary responsibilities of CCFA are not only to perfect the basic theories and to break away from western-centric and cultural conservatism, but also to train up specialists for CCFA, so as to develop CCFA further.
