With the development of the human history, the exchange of various nations' civilization is strengthened, which indicates a trend of fusion. However, we should realize that the difference of various nations' civilization will exist for a long time. If every civilization subject can not deal with other civilizations in a view of pluralism, the conflict between each other will occur. This situation makes the comparison between the Chinese and the western civilization necessary. Decided by their practice, the Chinese civilization and the western civilization indicate characteristic distinction between each other. The characteristic of the Chinese and the western culture were taken in shape on the initial stage of them during the pre-Qin and the ancient Greek period, displaying in their intellectual products— the myths and the legend.This paper is divided into four parts: the introduction, the first book, the second book and the last book.The author tries to analyze the advance of research in two aspects in the introduction. The first is the advance of the research for the pre-Qin myths, the Greek myths and the comparison between them. In this aspect the writer obtains such an understanding as the myths is looked on as a cultural phenomenon by more and more scholars, and the mythical comparative study is becoming more and more important. However, because of lacking the scientific and theoretical foundation, the scholars' comparative studies have the limitation of subjective impression, being trifling and given a far-fetched interpretation etc. In another aspect, the author pointed out that the basic drawback of the comparative study for the Chinese and western culture is the dual-opposition mode. Many scholars carry on the comparative study of the Chinese and western culture while ignoring the practice of the Chinese and the westerners.In the first book the author concentrates on the values that the Greek myths and the Greek legends reflect. The book deals with five chapters. Chapter one has been concentrated on the probing into the values that Crete's mythology reflects. In chapter two the author gives a detailed analysis of the values of image of the Olympic gods and their tales. Chapter three has been concentrated on the values that the ancient Greek hero's legend reflects. In chapter four the author probes carefully into the value of the epic of Homer, who was the supreme model of ancient Greek mythology and legend. In chapter five the author summarizes the values that ancient mythology and legend reflect. The author concludes that the advocacy of competition is the essential content of the values of Greek mythology and legend.The second book has been discussed the value which the pre-Qin myth fable manifests. The book is also divided into five chapters. In chapter one and chapter two the author discusses the values that the salt-kings tales have been manifested. Chapter one is concentrated on the .probing into the values that sanhuangwudi-mythology reflect. Chapter two is concentrated on the probing into the values that the tales of ancestors of xia dynasty, shang dynasty and zhou dynasty reflect.
