The body of the dissertation consists of an introduction, Part I and Part II, and a conclusion. The introduction is divided into two sections. The first section discusses the philosophical viewpoint, method, and aim of the research. The second section makes a textual research of the theory of temperament as postulated by Shen Kuo in his Dream Brook Sketchbook, concerning "alternation" and from the connection between elements of culture and the individual as related to the theory of temperament, as well as the reasons behind these.Part I studies the relationship between image-number and temperament-number, and points out Shen Kuo's dual viewpoint. It probes into the essence of Shen Kuo's shiji-number concept, while pointing out that relative ideas of some other researchers are most likely misunderstandings. It analyzes Shen Kuo's study of temperament-number in the Book of Temperament in Sima Qian's Historical Records, concluding that Shen Kuo properly defined and calibrated temperament -number nearly one thousand years ago. The part ends with a conclusion of the noumenon characteristics of Shen Kuo's concept of temperament-number.Examining the lulu of the Dream Brook Sketchbook, Part II looks at the relationship between yin-yang and lulu, and summarizes Shen Kuo's viewpoint on this relationship. It confirms Shen Kuo as the first person to refer to the concept of the "six-yin six-yang twelve lulu form", and based on the yin-yang theory admits the reasonable possibility that reibing produces another temperament, being the best result in the history. Part II also expounds another "yin-yang twelve lulu form" initiated by Shen Kuo, which cast light on the inner laws of the pre-Qin twelve lulu. It probes into the "sixty jiazi suggesting tones" recorded by Shen Kuo, and reveals that basically these show correspondences between features of astronomy and temperament, the dual structure, and a unique method to produce lulu. Moreover, the chapter puts forward new points of view about statements of "eight-eight pairs", "upproduce and downproduce", Zheng Xuan's "yin-yang six bodies", "six lulu" starting from pre-Qin period to the Han dynasty, Jing Fang's "sixty temperament", and descriptions of twelve lulu in pre-Qin times with respect to Shen Kuo's theory of temperament. The author concludes that the examination of Shen Kuo's theory of temperament fills a need in the study of temperament from the period of the Northern Song dynasty, and his theory is to inspire the study of ancient Chinese temperament in its cultural and philosophical context. Shen Kuo's contribution to the study of temperament used to be igorned. It should be fully acknowledged as one of the earlier works in the filed of temperament study.
