The artistic design in Han Dynasty occupies an special position in the history of ancient Chinese artistic design. Not only has it been admired for its delicately designed artifacts with exceptional qualities, but exerts profound influence on the posterity for its splendid culture, with which it has formulated the tradition of ancient Chinese artistic design. It's of tremendous theoretical value to undertake a culturally contextualized research on the artistic design in Han Dynasty, from the perspective of either cultural history or history of artistic design.Differing from the research on the forms of artifacts as well as decorative pattern and color, design thoughts of Han Dynasty examines systematically various categories of artistic designs contextualized in the cultural background of that time; that is to say, alongside the forms of artifacts, decorative pattern, color and lines, we should investigate the social and cultural background disguised by them.With a tremendous ideological and cultural background, the artistic design in Han Dynasty features as follows: (1) as the mainstay ideology at the beginning of Han Dynasty, "administrating by quietness and passivity" and "recruiting by temporization" advocated by Huang Laosi exert a great influence on the artistic design in the whole Han Dynasty. (2) After the priority was given to Confucianism by Emperor Han Wudi, Confucianism functioned as the background of cultural pattern. Under the impact of this cultural pattern, there appeared the artistic design ideology aiming to represent the Confucian philosophy. (3) With the establishment of Confucianism as cultural pattern and the prosperity of society, the artistic design in Han Dynasty came on the full-developing and booming stage. (4) Fairies, prophetic remarks were marginalized out of Han's mainstream ideology. Though not bearing elevating to a higher status, they greatly influence the artistic design in Han Dynasty with their operability.The above-mentioned five features constitute the fundamental ideological framework of artistic design. It's the diversity within this cultural background that the artistic design in Han Dynasty is displaying.It's self-evident that Han's cultural beliefs have great impact on its politics, economy and law, and leave a cultural trace on its artistic design. They represented their thoughts with the help of diversified forms of artistic design. By the same token, the designer consciously and unconsciously put the cultural beliefs into practice.
