Those scholars in the study of Old Chinese vocabulary haven't provided a profound study on those aesthetic words in calligraphic and painting books in ancient China, thus, the dissertation tries to do the research. Based on speciality of the study target, the dissertation attempts to give a new and multidimensional model of semantic analysis.This dissertation can be divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, the author provides the causes of the study of "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme and the changes brought about by the study. Then, some reflections upon the present situations of word study in Old Chinese and the problems in the target and method in the word study in Old Chinese are supplied. Meanwhile, the author defines its study object and clarifies the value of the study. The present situation of study on "Qi" and the theory & methodology are also given in the chapter.In the second chapter, synchronic description of "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme in the calligraphic and painting books during Dynasty Tang are expounded from the three aspects such as functional meaning, value meaning and implicative meaning. Functional meaning refers to the meaning corresponding to its functional distribution and it reveals the rational meaning. In terms of value meaning, through a comparison of "Qi" and other aesthetic morphemes in calligraphic and painting books, the place of the morpheme "Qi"in semantic field of aesthetic words is opened out. Implicative meaning refers to the associative meaning attached to its functional meaning and it conveys intuitive and aesthetic meaning. The semantic structure of "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme is composed of the three aforementioned meanings.In the third chapter, the author gives a diachronic description of "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme from the origin trace of "Qi" and the analysis of the evolution of "Qi". Words are looked upon as the central thread and the meaning dimensions corresponding to one word is looked upon as branch range in search of the origin of "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme in calligraphic and painting books. It can be found that most words contained "Qi", the aesthetic morpheme come from those words which refers to people.
