| The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 and was played a significant role in Hemingway's works. The Old Man and the Sea is popularly beloved. There are almost twenty translations about it. In the books, the author used many metaphors. Without doubt, different translations of these metaphors make different understanding. This thesis tries to contrast the translation of metaphor in ten versions of The Old Man and the Sea from the main semantic features of metaphor.Firstly, the introduction, literature review and the methodology are arranged. In this part, the main idea of The Old Man and the Sea, different translations and translators of the work and the actuality of study of metaphor are introduced.In the second chapter, we introduce semantic structures and semantic features of metaphor which are written by Shu Dingfang in Studies in Metaphor. According to the feature of semantic inconsistency, Shu Dingfang classified four semantic structures and twelve semantic features of metaphor from the cognitive semantics.The third chapter tries to contrast the translation of metaphor in ten versions of The Old Man and the Sea from the main semantic features of metaphor. There are twelve parts in the chapter, which is from twelve semantic features of metaphor. And we try to analyze and contrast all the metaphors in different translations of The Old Man and the Sea.Twelve semantic features of metaphor show in one of four semantic structures of metaphor and four semantic structures of metaphor show all the semantic features of metaphor. On the base of the relationship, we try to discuss metaphor translation strategies in four semantic structures of metaphor.In general, the main purpose of this thesis is as followings: Making a better understanding of the great work—The Old Man and the Sea with contrasting contrast the translation of metaphor in ten versions from the main semantic features of metaphor and finding a way of metaphor translation.
