Meng Haoran, one of the six great masters at the height of Tang Dynasty, occupies a significant position in the history of Chinese Poetry. This paper is divided into the first and last volumes which give a research of Haoran and his poetry from the horizontal and vertical angles.The first volume focuses on the study of Haoran and Poem Ousia Study. Haoran, a civilian intellect born in times of peace and prosperity, has been long regarded as a hermit from society because his wishes are always smashed by the cruel reality. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, however, more and more scholars consider him as an intellect who has strong desire for wealth and honor of becoming a government official. They think that the thing, reading poetry aloud before the emperor, which is closed related with his ideas, characters and density all his life is suspectable. This essay disputes all the evidences which have proved this thing to be false one by one in order to ascertain the authority of this thing. At the same time, his complicated and contradictory inner heart is revealed through the inquiry of the causes of Haoran's breaking promise to the emperor.The art value of Haoran's poetry surpasses the idealistic value. He obtain the artistic attainments on the basis of carrying on and developing the experience of former people's creative works. His poetry is well known for link the scenery with feelings whose overall artistic style is fresh and plain. The formation of this style is relevant to his reform of returning to the ancients. In addition, the region characteristic is outstanding. Haoran is a poet born in the place of Jin and Chu. His poetry is a representative of southern idyllists whose landscapes and cultures have an immeasurable influence on Haoran and his poetry.The last volume investigate the history of acceptance in the Chinese literary from the height of Tang Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. It can be separated into the acceptance of people and poetry. As for the acceptance of ideas and personalities, the intellects through the ages portray two aspects of Haoran: a poor scholar and a hermit. The portray of him is dynamic and more people tend to consider him as a hermit in the process of acceptance. In this process, the two pictures of Wei Wang plays an important role and brings about the great influences which fixes the image of Haoran as a hermit in Yuan Dynasty. One sentence is appropriate to describe his figure : ride as ass to cross Ba Bridge and look for plum flowers while treading on snow. As for the acceptance of poetry, there are more concern on Haoran than his poetry before the Ming Dynasty. During this period of time, people give a general idea of his poetry and praise his poetry generally. Since the beginning of Ming Dynasty, the acceptance of his poetry develops with the competition between Wei Wang and Haoran Meng and his status fluctuates day by day. Although the majority agrees that Wei Wang is super to Haoran Meng, some hold impartial views and treat this question in a dialectic way; some hold extreme views and calumniate his poetry exceedingly. People probe into Haoran Meng's poetry more deeply in the dispute of who is more excellent between Wang and Meng. |
