The Transition And Development Of Kunqu In Modern Times

This thesis aims to link social polity, era culture and people in different historical periods on the positioning of Kunqu, and the overall study of Kunqu heritage and development after the founding of New China.This thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part is the development of history and the status quo of Kunqu. First of all, before the founding of New China, it summarizes and analyzes the reasons of Kunqu originated in ancient times and the rise and fall, and Kunqu downfall but not disappearance latter-day. Then, it is the anatomy of Kunqu realistic situation after the founding of New China in order to show the studying orientation. The three strength of the heritage and development of Kunqu are Government, intellectuals and entertainers, especially the leading role of government significantly after the founding of New China. Under the guidance of Government, Kunqu, stage arts and theoretical research show distinctive era characteristics.The second part discusses Kunqu's heritage and development. It takes the traditional opera, adapted traditional finishing plays, new historical drama, modern drama and other new feature as subjects. According to the government policy orientation, the impact of popular culture plays and play's own characteristics, it will be divided into several historical periods for the dissertation of upwards four subjects. It also considers the immaturity of the new creation of the historical drama as well as the issues of repertoire.The third part discusses the heritage and development of Kunqu stage art. Firstly, it discusses the training of Kunqu heritage players from generation upon generation in the south and the north, to show the people's misunderstandings to Kunqu heritage players according to the New States enacting measures. Then, it discusses how latest Kunqu players use the traditional Kunqu actors to create a new aesthetic Kunqu figures.The fourth part discusses Kunqu theoretical research on the development and exploration. Firstly, it outlines Kunqu study in early 20th century. Then it discusses Kunqu research after the founding of new China, in order to reflect the continuation of the academic tradition. According to social background and academic research of their own characteristics, these Kunqu researches can be divided into three periods. Finally, it discusses the impact of Kunqu theories to its practice, in order to highlight the practical significance of Kunqu theoretical study.
