The dissertation is going to study the transformation from ancient novel to modern novel, centering on the translation novels published on the seven novel magzines in Shanghai in the late ten years of Ching dynasty.The dissertation consists of seven chapters in all, and the first chapter is summary, the sections between the second chapter and the fourth chapter is about the study of the translated novels from seven editorials, also chapters from the fifth to seventh about the study of the influence of translated novels on the created novels.The first chapter is mainly doing an overall summary about the translated novels from seven editorials. The first section is to comb the translated novels and their translater, original writer, original work. The second section, "translater-translate-translated novel", is to have cleared up and calculated ninety translaters who had names then, and could be formed into three kinds. The third and fourth sections are overview about the short and long translated novels, to conclude the overall feature of their changing styles.The second chapter studies the style of translated novel to discuss the transformation from ancient novel to modern novel, based on the changes of translated novel' s style chosen between the traditional style and western one by the translater. In this chapter, the first section is about the short translated novel' s succession and breakthrough from the Biji fiction, Chuanqi fiction and Huaben fiction. The short novel is a new form in that time, but its interrelation with the traditional one contains using, mending and discarding. The second section is about the long translated novel' s succession and breakthrough from Zhanghui fiction, mainly referring to the using, changing and breaking on three aspects of cliches and poetic rhythern' s language, including the first one, Zhanghui' s title; the second one, the wedge, beginning words, text and conclusion; the third one, talking about, talking on and disclosure in the ensuing chapter.The third chapter studies the language of translated novels, splitted into two sections. The first section mainly discusses the characteristics of translated novel' s language. Colloquialism, classical Chinese and translated words are the vocabularies used by translated novels, and the europeanization of sentence pattern and syntax has occurred. The second section explores the introduction and use of punctuation marks of translated novels. The academic works today on this problem are not deep and careful enough, but this paper argues that the language is very important to the novel, and one of the biggest differences between ancient novels and modern novels is the use of new punctuation marks by modern novels.The fourth chapter is about the narrative study of translated novels, cut into three parts. The first section, narrative perapective, mainly discusses the narrative angle of translated novels. The second section, narrative time, consists of the occuring time of the story and the frequency of narrating and so on. The third section, narrative structure, generalizes the structural mode of translated novels such as "travelling style", "theatrical style" and "dialogical style".Chapters from the fifth to seventh explore the changes of writing novels influenced by the translated novels. The fifith chapter, changes of novel' s style, in which, two sections respectively argues the changes of short novels and long ones. The sixth chapter, changes of language, within which, also two sections analyzes the language and punctuation marks. The seventh chapter, on narration, contains three sections, which make an analysis from narrative perspective, narrative time and narrative structure.
